reCall: Living Mission in a Consumer's World
Mark your calendars and plan to be part of reCall: Living Mission in a Consumer's World. Every two years, Mission Planting Canada plans a national congress to inspire church leaders to actively work at being missional churches in our contexts, as well as to support new mission plants. On November 15-17, this congress (www.thecongress.ca) will take place in Winnipeg, so it will never be more economical for our leaders to attend and be inspired. For this to really take hold, it is strongly encouraged that you aim to have at least two people (the more the better) attend from your congregation so that there is a shared experience from which to work when you go back to your congregations. At budget time last year, Pastor Larry encouraged you to put some money in your budget to have folks from your church attend.

The Synod Committee for Mission is very excited about this opportunity, so they have registered us to take advantage of a denominational group rate, which means that we have committed that at least 20 Lutherans will attend, which brings the price down by $30 per person to $169. Moreover, from the Mission budget, they have also committed to subsidizing the first 25 people to the tune of $80 per person. If you are interested (in) of taking advantage of this group rate, as well as taking advantage of the subsidy, contact Pastor Larry at lulrich@elcic.ca (Deadline to apply for this is October 5, 2011)

We're Stronger Together, Say Anglican, Lutheran Youth Coordinators
Meeting on scenic Thetis Island, B.C., 24 Anglican and Lutheran regional youth coordinators planned the future of their joint ministry work at Stronger Together 2011, Sept. 13 to 16. The consultation emerged from grassroots energy to support and connect youth coordinators who work at the levels of dioceses (Anglican) or synods (Lutheran).

"This was a really great way to gather folks together to focus specifically on their role of equipping," said Andrew Stephens-Rennie, director of youth ministries for the (Anglican) Diocese of Ottawa and event organizer. "We also dreamed big dreams for youth ministry in our church."

Highlights from National Church Council’s Fall Meeting
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada’s (ELCIC) National Church Council (NCC) met in Winnipeg from September 8-10. Council members conduct the business of the church between National Conventions. The following is an overview of highlights from the fall NCC meeting.

Orientation

At the 2011 ELCIC National Convention in July, ten new council members were elected to replace outgoing members, including two new officers of the church. On Thursday evening, following the council’s opening worship, National Bishop Susan C. Johnson and Vice President Sheila Hamilton provided an orientation to all council members on the constitution, administrative bylaws and structure of the ELCIC, as well as the role of NCC, its governance model and strategic plan.

Telling Our Faith Stories
Usually detailing a personal experience, the telling of one’s personal faith stories – also known as Dwelling in the Word – has become a regular part of NCC meetings. These reflections are one of the ways NCC is responding to the new Call to Spiritual Renewal initiative (www.elcic.ca/csr), which encourages deeper discipleship within our church through a practice of: pray, read, worship, study, serve, give, tell. At the fall meeting, Rev. Jeff Smith, Rev. Matthew Diegel and Rev. Trish Schmermund shared their reflections with council. Videos of their reflections can be viewed online: www.elcic.ca/National-Church-Council/Dwelling-In-The-World.cfm

Women's Ministry Resources
This spring and summer, we've had the opportunity to speak with many women from across the ELCIC. One question that we've heard several times is, since Esprit magazine is no longer available, where can congregational women's groups find Bible study resources that are faithful to our Lutheran beliefs? As the non-profit publisher for the Lutheran church, we've been able to help connect women's groups with such resources, and would like to take the opportunity to share a few suggestions with you, in case your group is also looking for appropriate study materials.

Please find enclosed a sheet with a few suggestions. If you would like more information about these resources, or more ideas for your women's group study, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. Your congregation should have recently received brochures with more information on each of the study ideas outlined here, but we will be happy to send some directly to you.

There are many other resources available, so if you are interested in something not mentioned, please let us know how we can assist further.

Augsburg Fortress Canada is the ministry of publishing for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Your support of our non-profit ministry enables us to continue to produce resources for your use. Thank you for participating in this virtuous circle.

Hello from the Urban. We had a very wonderful night on Sept. 16th. We held a special event at the Urban called the Coffee House/Jam Session and and it was a hit. We had approximately twenty people show up.

We received a drum kit as a donation just prior to the event and that certainly added to the excitement. We invited people to bring their musical instruments and to come and have a good time together making music. We had a fellow come with his trombone, two fellows brought guitars, the drums were set up, and Leslie's daughter brought her flute. Leslie and her girls showed us some real cute action songs, the trombone player would play a tune and we would "name that tune", the Urban choir sang and with only two practices under their belt, they were awesome. The people played "Smoke On The Water" and a highlight was when the drummer and the trombone player performed the theme from the Pink Panther. One of our community ladies brought a small karaoke machine and so there was plenty of singing.

Many people are now asking when the next event will be held. The ones who attended enjoyed it so much that others now want to be a part of this.

October 23 (Sun), 24 (Mon), 30 (Sun) are the dates that we require approximately 50 volunteers to assist us in this biggest fund-raiser of the year! We call all our supporters on our data base (1400 +) to give toward our year end goal of $25,000.00! We are gratefully using the office space of On Business to run this event over the three evenings – thanks Ken Day to you and your staff. So when your phone rings on one of those evenings, remember, it is friends calling friends to support Luther Village and reach our year end goal!

There may be a twist to this...we are working on saving some phone calls and doing it online, so if we have your email address, you may receive an email to donate at that time online! If you’d like to donate online instead of over the phone or snail mail, please send us your email address! Thanks so much for your continued support of this wonderful outdoor camping ministry we all own!

Going Barefoot III
Everything Old is New Again: Communication and Fundraising in the Digital World
Oct. 14, 2011
Canadian Mennonite University, Winnipeg

Communication, fundraising and community engagement seems more challenging than ever, what with all the new technologies, so many communication channels, the many pressing needs vying for attention, and changes in the media landscape.

How do churches and non-profit groups share their messages and reach new audiences in this digital world? Or do we already have all the tools we need—do we just need to find new and creative ways to use them? And how do we reach out and share messages with boomers—that large segment of the Canadian population that is looking for new ways to be meaningfully engaged in the world?

Finding ways to use traditional skills to meet new challenges and reach new audiences is the goal of Going Barefoot III, Oct. 14, 2011 at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg.

Presenters:
Owen Charters, CEO, CanadaHelps
Bill Roberts, President and CEO of Vision TV
Gayle Goosen, Founder and Creative Director, Barefoot Creative

Cost: $84 (includes GST)

In addition to keynote presentations, Going Barefoot III will feature informative workshops on fundraising, using social media, working with the traditional media and marketing.

Save the date now! More information, including registration information, coming soon. If you have questions, e-mail John Longhurst, Director of Resources & Public Engagement, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, at jdl562009@gmail.com
