| September Conference Level Consultation Locations |
| September Conference Level Consultation Locations have now been finalized. As was reported in Bishop Elaine’s letter to you following the National Convention, Synod staff is holding conference consultation meetings where opportunities for discussion and policy development can occur. Your congregational leaders (council and rostered leaders) should have received Bishop Elaine’s letter (July) and a FAQ sheet (August). While most questions may be answered by reading the sheet, it is hoped that the consultation events will be a time in which people can be heard and responded to, as well as a time to hear how other congregations are responding. Please inform your council and members of your congregation of the dates, times and locations. It would be good if at least one person is present from your congregation.
ELCIC Restructuring Implementation Teams- SK and MNO executives and implementation teams met in Russell, MB on Sept. 11 and 12th. Information will be shared at the conference consultations.

| reCall: Living Mission in a Consumer's World |
| Mark your calendars and plan to be part of reCall: Living Mission in a Consumer's World. Every two years, Mission Planting Canada plans a national congress to inspire church leaders to actively work at being missional churches in our contexts, as well as to support new mission plants. On November 15-17, this congress (www.thecongress.ca) will take place in Winnipeg, so it will never be more economical for our leaders to attend and be inspired. For this to really take hold, it is strongly encouraged that you aim to have at least two people (the more the better) attend from your congregation so that there is a shared experience from which to work when you go back to your congregations. At budget time last year, Pastor Larry encouraged you to put some money in your budget to have folks from your church attend.
The Synod Committee for Mission is very excited about this opportunity, so they have registered us to take advantage of a denominational group rate, which means that we have committed that at least 20 Lutherans will attend, which brings the price down by $30 per person to $169. Moreover, from the Mission budget, they have also committed to subsidizing the first 25 people to the tune of $80 per person. If you are interested (in) of taking advantage of this group rate, as well as taking advantage of the subsidy, contact Pastor Larry at lulrich@elcic.ca (Deadline to apply for this is October 5, 2011) |

Project Support Grants for projects that correspond with CECF (Church Extension and Capital Fund) guidelines. This supports a congregational one-time project, either as seed money for an outreach initiative that the congregation plans to continue on its own after start-up, or that can normally be completed within a year. Some examples of initiatives qualifying are: assisting a congregation with developing promotional and outreach materials for their community; assistance with providing an internship placement in a mission congregation; assistance with conducting surveys in a new development; assistance with stewardship planning or capital campaigns; assistance in providing short term funds for a staff person in some new mission initiative.

Congregational leaders are encouraged to dream about missional opportunities over the summer as well as to include this on council agendas either over the summer or in September. Deadlines for applications for both types of grants are September 30, 2011.

12 for 12: Developing Full Communities (National Youth Project) -
As news continues to filter in about the heart- wrenching famine in Somalia, the importance of "helping to build" sustainable communities makes even more sense. Building sustainable communities is what our National Youth Project is all about. As you do your fund-raising for Saskatoon, why not consider a fund-raising event for this worthwhile cause, or consider a tithe (10%) of all your fundraising proceeds? Each community costs $5000 to develop. Can your youth group set a goal to provide a tenth, a quarter, a half of one community? Sherwood Park Lutheran is sending a challenge to all of us? How many communities can we develop from MNO?

| Stewardship Thots |
In a recent article "U.S. Christians and the Riddle of Stingy Giving", Chick Lane, Director of the Center for Stewardship Leaders, says that unlike the old good news-bad news jokes, the story of giving by U.S. Christians is a bad news-worse news story. The bad news is that the average U.S. Christian contributes 2.9 percent of their income to charitable causes. The worse news is that because a few people give a very high percentage of their income to charitable causes, the median U.S. Christian gives just 0.6 percent of income to charities.

| Women's Ministry Resources |
| This spring and summer, we've had the opportunity to speak with many women from across the ELCIC. One question that we've heard several times is, since Esprit magazine is no longer available, where can congregational women's groups find Bible study resources that are faithful to our Lutheran beliefs? As the non-profit publisher for the Lutheran church, we've been able to help connect women's groups with such resources, and would like to take the opportunity to share a few suggestions with you, in case your group is also looking for appropriate study materials.
Please find enclosed a sheet with a few suggestions. If you would like more information about these resources, or more ideas for your women's group study, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. Your congregation should have recently received brochures with more information on each of the study ideas outlined here, but we will be happy to send some directly to you.
There are many other resources available, so if you are interested in something not mentioned, please let us know how we can assist further.
Augsburg Fortress Canada is the ministry of publishing for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Your support of our non-profit ministry enables us to continue to produce resources for your use. Thank you for participating in this virtuous circle.

| Update from the Urban |
| Hello all. This has been such a wonderful and exceptional time at the Urban. At the present time I have help and things are going great. Pastor Leslie Poulin is now at the Urban three days a week and Rhonda Gates, the wonderful community lady, have made so many things possible. Leslie was very willing to address one of the requests from the community.
The Urban has now started a choir!! We have also been able to form the Urban Worship Community Committee. There are ten people on this committee and they are certainly taking this responsibility serious. Our meal teams have noted that the workload has greatly decreased. The meal teams now come in with the food, serve it, and then they are able to leave because the dishes are now looked after. Our community committee ensures that tables are wiped, taken down and that chairs are stacked. "What's the buzz, tell me what's happening" is the only way to describe the impact of our upcoming coffee house/jam session. Friday, Sept. 16th the Urban will open up for a special event. We have several local, talented musicians and they are going to come and share their music. |
 |
We have a wonderful story to tell about how all of this came about. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our very generous churches. We have been blessed with bounty. Starbuck's youth that attended Vocational Bible Study donated one non-perishable food item each day and they filled our pantry. They also prepared some bags that go far beyond our typical hygiene kits. We have also had such wonderful meals provided at the Urban. A group came in from the Carmen area and they brought fresh corn and an outdoor cooker. It gave a chance for our community to work alongside the generous folk and it created a very festive time for all. Our worship services are becoming more and more beautiful. We had a lovely wall hanging donated and that goes up on Sunday. I brought my singing bowl to the Urban and we start each service with it. It just brings everyone into the same space and is very effective. We also want to thank all of our wonderful guest ministers. Life is very good with all of the generous contributions of time, food, and energy. We will be holding our AGM in October and we invite you to consider coming out and joining us. We hope to have our choir sing and you may just find a place to utilize your gifts and talents at the Urban. Did you know that we now have a regular worship community of approximately seventy-five people? The community provides so much joy to all of us and we invite you to be a part of it. |

| Kids Helping Kids Report of Activities |
“For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes” (Revelations 7:17 KJV).
We are having a good time in this summer vacation and most of the kids have put the time into good use helping their parents and guardians both in domestic and farm work . This is the period where maize, groundnuts; beans and other food crops are planted and considering that most of our kids live with families that depend mostly on subsistence agriculture to feed the rest of the family and maybe take part of the produce to the market for exchange into cash for other basic needs. During our last assembly discussion to find out what most of the kids have been doing within the last two months of vacation, we discovered that majority of the girls help in the farms. Some have travelled to spend the vacation with other family members in other places out of town.
It was interesting to know that a few of the boys between 12-17 years have been involved in some personal income generating activities like gathering sand from the gutters after the rains which they sell in wheel-barrows. This is a very common practice here for male kids during the rainy season. In the assembly we talked of the our responsibility as children in the family especially during school vacation where they have to give their parents a helping hand in household activities and taking part in those activities that bring revenue to the family. Sometimes this can be mistaken for child labour but the fact is clear that there is actually room for children to participate in their own way to raise-up revenue in the family and the parents taking care not to give them what is more than them to do.
We had a total of 48 kids present out of whom 44 are those registered in the program. 48 of the 65 packages were equally shared out while the kids who were absent have been coming after that day to collect theirs.

| Saturday Night is Alright!!! |
Please join us on Saturdays at 5:30 pm.
Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota St., Winnipeg, MB
- · Saturday September 17, Communion
- · Saturday September 24, Healing
Saturday worship developed from a vision to provide an alternate time for those with Sunday morning commitments, and an alternate worship style for those drawn to a less structured service. It is a relaxed, informal worship led by guitar or piano, offered as a break in your busy weekend with plenty of time to go for dinner afterwards and enjoy the rest of your evening!
Once a month we offer communion; once a month there is the opportunity to be anointed as a part of a healing service.
Several Taize worship services are also held throughout the year. Taize is quiet, meditative worship based on scriptures and chanting.
In the Emergent-style worship services, the life of Jesus is seen and celebrated as a model for hope, for social justice, for loving all humanity, and for the hope of taking part in bringing in God's Kingdom in the here and now. These worship services do not use the traditional liturgies or creeds but rather words that apply to us today, teaching us that being a Christian requires practice, learning the compassion of charity, and promoting active participation in God's work in the world, reclaiming the message of Jesus. |

Everything Old is New Again: Communication and Fundraising in the Digital World
Oct. 14, 2011
Canadian Mennonite University, Winnipeg
Communication, fundraising and community engagement seems more challenging than ever, what with all the new technologies, so many communication channels, the many pressing needs vying for attention, and changes in the media landscape.
How do churches and non-profit groups share their messages and reach new audiences in this digital world? Or do we already have all the tools we need—do we just need to find new and creative ways to use them? And how do we reach out and share messages with boomers—that large segment of the Canadian population that is looking for new ways to be meaningfully engaged in the world?
Finding ways to use traditional skills to meet new challenges and reach new audiences is the goal of Going Barefoot III, Oct. 14, 2011 at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg.
Presenters:
Owen Charters, CEO, CanadaHelps
Bill Roberts, President and CEO of Vision TV
Gayle Goosen, Founder and Creative Director, Barefoot Creative
