| Who is crazy enough to be meeting early on a Saturday morning???? | |
The Lutheran Campus Ministry Team, that’s who!! What? Did I hear correctly? Where did the Lutheran Chaplain go? After the chaplain’s position was left vacant with recent restructuring and changing of job descriptions within the MNO synod office, the Committee for Mission wanted to reestablish campus ministry. Because of the desire to include young adults in the planning and carrying out of campus ministry, it was only logical that Peer Ministry be the format. Our Peer Ministers are 3rd, 4th, and 5th year students whose goal it is to effectively provide Christ’s presence, care and support to their peers on each of our four university campuses in the MNO Synod. These energetic and enthusiastic individuals met on Saturday, September 8 for orientation and to get to know one another. Discussions for the day included student support services and settings at each of the universities, brainstorming for upcoming events and a review of the expectations in the job description. Guided by their faith and the desire to help others, this group is highly motivated to become a resource to their peers on campus, by providing guidance and maintaining support. So, if you are a student at either Brandon or Lakehead University, or are attending the University of Winnipeg or Manitoba, be expecting a call soon!! |

| Update from the Committee for Mission | |
Sr. Monica Denk, ELCIC International Volunteer Coordinator, is seeking at least one new Volunteer in Mission from the MNO synod this year. VIM are full-time volunteers who serve away from home, normally for a minimum of six months. They can be placed with partner churches and other Christian organizations in countries around the world, including Canada. For more information, go to www.elcic.ca/In-Mission-in-the-World. Fran Schmidt has accepted a conditional offer from ELCIC Mission in the World to be the new ELCIC missionary in Peru. Fran is in her final year at LTS in Saskatoon, so the offer is conditional upon her completion of the requirements for eligibility for ordination. In the conditions are met, it is expected that Fran will be deployed in the fall of 2008, first to full-time Spanish language training for a few months and then on to the placement in Lima, Peru. In August, Margaret Sadler and Marcus Busch started a new one year ELCIC/ELCA joint placement as Short-term missionaries in Cambodia. |

| CLWR Sunday resources available | |
| Lutheran congregations across Canada are being encouraged to recognize and celebrate the international relief and development work undertaken by CLWR. Both the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) have designated a Sunday to mark this occasion—September 30th for the ELCIC and October 7th for LCC. Resources have been compiled to assist with worship planning and other special events. They are available for download at www.clwr.org/CLWR_Sunday. The 2007 theme “journeying together to improve the lives of others” points to the progressive and communal nature of development work. “Improving people’s lives in a sustainable way isn’t instant, but rather a process,” says CLWR’s director of communications and education, Daranne Harris. “It’s a process that local partners who are more than just beneficiaries, staff, volunteers and donors engage in collectively with the help of God.” |
