Thanks to the United Church of Canada, we would like to share a document that the UCC uses when it comes to social media interactions and how we can all avoid the pratfalls of this type of media.

Cameroon Companions Update
Pastor Jack and Val Fredrick have returned to the Cameroon for a couple of months for a visit, and while they are there will be doing some work on behalf of the MNO Synod in our three areas of partnership, Kids Helping Kids Orphan Program, Women in Leadership and Evangelism. They arrived there this past week. Below are some excerpts from their recent communication.
We arrived in Brussels Tuesday am (0ctober 18) and were greeted with the news that Yaounde airport, our destination was not available: we landed in Douala which I classify as my least favourite airport.

It took us two hours to collect our bags in Douala, and board a bus supplied by Brussels Air and then another four hours to arrive in Yaounde at midnight. I had phoned from the Brussels airport to inform Anne Langdje of our change of plans (8 min ph call $38usd) and that we would be bused to Yaounde Airport, which in fact didn't happen as we dropped off at a dark bus stop in Yaounde: try and identify your 5 bags in the dark. The good news was that our pick-up driver had tracked us down and we were warmly greeted by Anne and went horizontal at 1am.

Train tickets were arranged from Yaounde to N'Gaoundere, cell phone was empowered with time, but the ATM was not friendly (actually tried several).

The train ride was good, not smooth, but good and we arrived early 6:30am on jeudi (only twelve and a half hours which is almost as good as it gets). We were warmly received by Phil Nelson of the ELCA, who has treated us royally.

I have met with Bishop Nyiwe this morning. The ordination of the first women (could be four) will take place May 9th, 2012. An invitation will be forthcoming. Meetings will be taking place within the next two weeks to decide who - Jack will be attending these meetings.

I was finally able to get an ATM here in N'gaoundere that was friendly. I had phoned the Royal Bank in Canada and spoke with them for 16 min on Skype and the cost was $1.37. The RBC suggested that when travelling to Africa to let them know before you depart as your card may be blocked for security reasons.

We were able to get a vehicle (Prada) from Phil and are now in white knuckle mode dodging mot os. Our accommodation is great and we are living in one of the finer guest houses for which we are appreciative.

On Saturday we met with William and drove into town and purchased supplies and then William, Val and Jack packaged over 70 bags in very confined space to deliver to the kids yesterday. Unfortunately Fanta's youngest child (7 mos) was very ill and in the hospital. We visited with her and the good news was that he was improving.

Update from the Urban
Hello from the Urban. This has been such a busy month for us all. Friday, October 21 the Urban held a special event from 6-8:30 p.m. We had a Square Dance night. We did not have a large turnout but what really surprised us was that the community members who did come were all men except for one lady. We had a great deal of fun as Pastor Leslie tried to teach us all how to square dance. There was more than one "your other right!"

Saturday was the Four Directions Walk. There were more people than last year that attended.
the urban
Hilde Purdy from Feed My Lambs arrived with volunteers and she brought soup, sandwiches, and coffee. We had plenty of hygiene kits for distribution and some winter wear. Hilde took the winter clothing with her to hand out on her visits to feed people who are living on the streets.

We then had our worship service on Sunday and this was followed by our AGM. It was wonderful to have our choir sing at the AGM and one of our fellow's played When the Saints Go Marching In on his trombone.

As of Sunday, the Urban has served ten thousand two hundred and fifty-eight meals this year. There will be plenty of more exciting news coming from the Urban in the near future. For those who are wondering when we will be making our move upstairs, it now appears to be November 16th that everyone will move their offices. According to Rev. Cathy Campbell, we will still have access to the kitchen but we will have to serve the food upstairs. This is going to be somewhat of a challenge but we will work at keeping things running smoothly.

Why LV?
Growth of young adults while working on staff....a reflection from the mother of a new staff member this past season:

“I heard from one of the Grandmothers during adult sessions that her grandson was absolutely in love with him and every time he walked by he called out (my sons name) continually! It warms my heart to hear from others who have been watching him over the summer that he is doing well. As Mothers, we always hope that our kids will figure things out. On my end, I have missed him quite a bit but am so grateful for this opportunity for him to explore and achieve that next level of independence. I trust it is working well on your end and that you are giving him the feedback he needs to grow. I feel that if you will have him, he might be doing this for awhile:)”

Dinner & Dance

Diaconal Ministry: Discernment, History and Formation
J-Term & Continuing Ed Course
Course Description: This course has two components. It introduces students to the historical, theological, and social contexts in which the work of diaconal ministry has been expressed throughout the church's history and asks how that history continues to impact the present. The course also explores a theology of spirituality based in the Lutheran confessional writings and provides opportunity for the discussion and development of a baptismal discipline and vocational discernment, particularly as it pertains to the diaconal calling. The course carries 3 hours of academic credit; a recommended maximum is fourteen students.

Note: This course is not the Diaconal Ministry Formation Event held at Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary.

Dates and Location: The course will run January 9-20, 2012 (excluding the weekend). Classes will meet mornings and afternoons and on MLK, Jr. Day on the campus of Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois. Students will have some written work to do before the course begins and after the course concludes.

Saturday Night is Alright!!!
Please join us at Faith Lutheran (1311 Dakota St.) on Saturdays at 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday November 5, Healing
  • Saturday November 12, Communion
  • Saturday November 19, Emergent
  • Saturday November 26, Worship

Saturday worship developed from a vision to provide an alternate time for those with Sunday morning commitments, and an alternate worship style for those drawn to a less structured service.

It is a relaxed, informal worship led by guitar or piano, offered as a break in your busy weekend with plenty of time to go for dinner afterwards and enjoy the rest of your evening!

Once a month we offer communion; once a month there is the opportunity to be anointed as a part of a healing service.

Several Taize worship services are also held throughout the year. Taize is quiet, meditative worship based on scriptures and chanting.

In the Emergent-style worship services, the life of Jesus is seen and celebrated as a model for hope, for social justice, for loving all humanity, and for the hope of taking part in bringing in God's Kingdom in the here and now. These worship services do not use the traditional liturgies or creeds but rather words that apply to us today, teaching us that being a Christian requires practice, learning the compassion of charity, and promoting active participation in God's work in the world, reclaiming the message of Jesus.

Celebrating Shared Ministry
Abundant Life, Christ & St. Luke’s Zion Churches are celebrating one year of partnership for youth ministry!

In October of 2010, these three congregations jointly hired a full time Director of Youth Ministries. This shared ministry approach benefits from individual events and support at each congregation with Christian Education and Worship, as well as combined youth events for the three groups.

As an extension of shared youth ministry, congregational events in Lent were done together traveling between the three locations for Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Ash Wednesday Worship, and Mid-Week Lenten Services. Thanks be to God for this wonderful opportunity!

Help Someone You know Reduce Their Energy Bills This Winter
Through Manitoba Hydro’s Lower Income Energy Efficiency Program, qualifying homeowners can receive FREE insulation (including installation) and a new high-efficiency natural gas furnace for $19 per month over 5 years.*

“Many think that this offer is too good to be true,” says Kristel Mann of the Affordable Energy Unit, “but there is no catch. We just ask you to send us an application along with some basic tax information.” Kristel also notes that seniors on pensions can qualify for this program.

Participants who add free insulation to their home have more comfortable homes, and may lower their energy bills by an average of $250 per year. Those who upgrade their old standard efficiency natural gas furnace to a high efficiency natural gas furnace may save up to an additional $270 per year.

Homeowners may qualify if they live in a detached or semi-detached home, with a household income that fall under established income levels. For example, two people living in Winnipeg with an annual household income of $35,228 may be eligible to qualify.

“Many customers find out about this program through word of mouth,” says Kristel. “We’re working with churches, service organizations, and community groups to spread the word.” If you or someone you know like your parent, neighbour or a member of your congregation could benefit from this program, please encourage them to contact Manitoba Hydro:

We Are What We Sing
by Charlotte Kroeker
The past few years have brought us new awareness of the power of music. We have Baby Mozart, Baby Bach, and Baby Beethoven products and their relatives, along with knowledge that music contributes to intellectual development. Neuroscientists explain that music is fundamental to our brains and that music communicates the emotions and ideas that are the building blocks of human nature. Music therapy offers healing for mind and body. Marketing experts use the suggestive nature of music to tap our purchasing instincts. Educators understand the capacity of music to help children learn facts and concepts. We watch people who have Alzheimer’s and those who have suffered a stroke retain the capacity to sing and play an instrument much longer than the ability to speak words or to carry on a conversation.
