Worship: History and Structure

Are you interested in learning more about how our Lutheran Worship was developed and how it reflects our biblical teachings? A course entitled

Worship: History and Structure will be offered at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Steinbach on the weekend of November 23-24, 2007. This is a credit course if you are registered in the Certificate in Lay Ministry program, but the course is open to anyone interested in digging deeper into the study of worship.

Co-facilitators for this event are Rev. Don Engel and Ms Donna Engel. This spousal team has been working together in many congregational settings through decades of service to the church. Pastor Don currently serves as chair of the ELCIC Program Committee for Worship. Donna is an accomplished musician who has been sharing her musical gifts in a variety of roles over the years.

Bring your personal Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal with you or one will be provided at the event. Come and learn together.

The registration form is available below and on the MNO Synod website. Please register by November 16th to dbeyer@elcic.ca

MUSIC VIDEOS - For those of you who were in attendance or had youth attend the Sr. High Retreat at Luther Village over thanksgiving weekend, there was mention made of making available a DVD for your congregation of the music videos that were made at that event. It's coming. They are in production. Rick Scherger, our communication person is doing them for us, including having the cover reflect the theme of the weekend. One per congregation who had youth present will be available. The plan is to show the videos again at the beginning of the next MNO Youth and Young Adult Service on November 18 at Sherwood Park Lutheran, Winnipeg. Youth leaders will then be given the copies for their congregations. A special thank you to Jeremy Langner who spent hours over Thanksgiving Weekend putting them in their final form. They are amazing.

OCTOBER YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT SERVICE Thanks to Zion, Beasuejour for hosting our October Youth and Young Adult service, and for the incredible participation from around the Synod. There was over 175 of us there last Sunday night. It was just great.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING - Mark January 11-12, 2008 on your calendars. An MNO Synod youth leadership training event for youth and junior youth leaders will be hosted at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota St. on those two days. As part of the training, you will receive a manual and be trained in Peer Ministry, one of the most effective ways to do youth ministry, as well as to build leadership in your youth. Information will be coming to your Church Council in the next week, because they are being asked to pay the cost for youth leaders to attend.

TRAVELLING TO THE YOUTH GATHERING - Getting to Edmonton to hook up with the National Bus Trip from Edmonton to Whitehorse - is the question. Some of you have already let the office know whether your group wants to fly or bus it to Edmonton and back. What is your group's preference? Please email Larry at lulrich@elcic.ca by October 30.

Partnership support and Special projects

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

The Committee for Mission is meeting in Winnipeg on November 16-17, 2007.  This time is coming up very quickly, and we apologize that this letter has not come out a bit sooner. With some new staff in the office not yet fully aware of all the timelines, we beg your forgiveness.  Part of our agenda will include a review of the ministries of congregations and institutions that have received funding in 2007, through either the Partnership Support program or through the Special Projects program.  If your congregation or institution received funding in 2007, please submit your review for 2007 by October 30 to the Synod Office.

We also will be looking at applications for funding in 2008, and making decisions about allocations. You will find two application forms (along with guidelines) as separate attachments, one for Partnership Support and one for Special Projects. This is to be submitted to the Synod Office by October 30.  This may require a special meeting of your Council or Council executive, in order to prepare within this timeline.

The funding for Partnership Support and Special Projects is made possible from two sources, benevolence dollars from MNO congregations, and the ELCIC’s Church Extension and Capital Fund (CECF) The Church Extension and Capital Fund (CECF) is a fund established by the ELCIC to provide an ongoing source of funding to purchase land for new congregational development, and to finance capital projects for congregations and ministries of this church. Each year, the synod receives a portion of the interest generated by this fund, based upon its baptized membership, to be designated toward mission programs in the Synod, according to guidelines established by CECF. All of this means that when congregations are developing, in transition, and/or trying new outreach initiatives, the MNO Synod may offer support as a financial partner.

Thank you for being congregations and institutions in mission for others!

Sincerely in Christ

Rev. Matthew Diegel,                                         Rev. Larry Ulrich

Ending Hunger – an evening with Steve Bell

Canadian Foodgrains Bank has been partnering with singer/songwriter Steve Bell on various projects this past year.  Steve and his wife Nanci visited some of our projects in Ethiopia in January, and we have produced two short videos about this journey (including a music video of a new song Steve wrote after the trip.)  These videos will be mailed to churches associated with our 15 member agencies and are also available on request from head office.  Together with Steve Bell, we have launched a program called End Hunger Fast to encourage people to consider how they can get more deeply involved in the work of ending hunger.  To find out more or to watch the videos, visit www.endhungerfast.com.  This fall, Steve is touring Canada and playing with various symphony orchestras across the country.  He will be in Winkler December 11, Neepawa December 12, Portage La Prairie December 13, Brandon December 17, Virden December 18 and Winnipeg December 14, 15 & 16. Canadian Foodgrains Bank will be promoted at all of his symphony sessions concerts.
