MNO Synod Says Thanks
The Synod Office would like to extend a thank you to all of the congregations who hosted or attended the Synod Conference consultations in September. It was good to hear from people, be engaged in what it means to be Christian in the world, to honour our Lutheran heritage of understanding of scripture and to help each other see what is possible in a changing church context. Thank you for those who sent letters and emails of support to the synod office. MNO

MARK your Place in the SCRIPTure was the theme of the Thanksgiving Youth Retreat held at Luther Village this past weekend. Sixty youth and leaders (including 3 Anglicans) certainly enjoyed the weather, but they really came together to work with our presenters, Barret Miller, Martine Teetaert and Caroline Wintoniw, on how to take a Scripture text to the point of writing and presenting a sermon drama.

Six original dramas were written on six texts from the Gospel of Mark. Watch for these to be posted on the Synod website, which you are then invited to adapt for use in your congregation in 2012 during the year of Mark.

It's What I'm Supposed to Do
Josh Nelson

A Christian writer was telling about a new convert to the faith that started attending his church. She was in her early 30s, but already very successful in her career and was well compensated. When she became a Christian, and started attending that church, the offering totals were noticeably increased and it was apparent that this new Christian woman had quickly and remarkably become the church's top giver.

The writer asked this young woman what her motivation was for giving so much to the work of this church—was it gratitude for her own personal financial success? Or was it a feeling of joy that she received in giving so faithfully and generously? Why was she giving, and for goodness sake, why was she giving so much?

She was kind of surprised that her gifts were considered to be so far above the norm. She answered his question though by saying, "Gratitude? Sure I guess I feel gratitude for what I've achieved and what God has given me. But right now, at this brand new stage of discipleship, I'm just giving because it is what I'm supposed to do. It's what Jesus commands me to do. Maybe later, when I'm more adept at this, I'm sure I'll have all sorts of great theological reasons for my giving. But right now, I just give because I'm told to give."

That simple and straight-forward understanding of being a courageous and willing disciple is very helpful for us all, especially those of us who may have been in church a long time. Though we may have many reasons to give, it is very helpful to remember that our first impulse is simply a reaction to Jesus saying to us, "Come and follow me." And we give of ourselves, or of our time, our energy, our passion, our money—all because Christ has asked us to be faithful and to be his church.

Lutheran Pastor Appointed Dean of Anglican Cathedral in Canada
In a historic move, the Anglican diocese of Rupert's Land appointed a Lutheran pastor, the Rev. Paul Johnson, as dean of the diocese and incumbent for St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg, reports the Anglican Journal. This is the first time a Canadian Lutheran pastor has been appointed dean in an Anglican cathedral in Canada. A dean is the priest in charge of a cathedral ("mother church") and occupies a senior position in a diocese.

Update from the Urban
The Lutheran Urban Ministry Corporation AGM on Sunday Oct. 23, 3:00 PM at the Urban,
St. Matthews Anglican Church,
631 St. Matthews (at Maryland and St. Matthews).
the urban
Hello from the Urban. There are many exciting things happening at the Urban. We are extremely busy in October. We held our Thanksgiving dinner this past Sunday. A huge thank you to Abundant Life for preparing and serving. In order to lessen the work for the meal team, Rhonda Gates, Leslie Poulin and I cooked four turkeys, three hams, Lisa and friends peeled and mashed forty pounds of potatoes, cooked veggies, and made coleslaw. Gloria Dei provided pumpkin and apple pies for dessert. We also had several bags of buns from Epiphany. We fed one hundred and fifty-four people. Clean up of the room began at 3:00 p.m.

Our Urban Worship Community Committee worked very hard at ensuring that everything went smoothly. People often ask what we need, so, here is a list of "hot ticket" items for distribution. We always need socks, especially with cold weather due soon. We offer hygiene kits on a routine basis. Has anyone got any ideas on what we might be able to provide for "Urban Winter Survival Kits"? I was thinking along the lines of those disposable mitt warmers, dry clean woolen socks, a candle in a container for emergency warming, packets of hot chocolate and energy bars, or even chunks of baker's chocolate. Perhaps even those beef jerky packets would be good. I am sure that there are some great ideas out there and we welcome them. Waterproof matches would be a real bonus. We are also in desperate need of razors, feminine hygiene products, and non-perishable food items for distribution.

We also received a donation of three electric space heaters that were put into good working order by an electrician that I know. We offered them as bingo prizes and they went fast.
We have a Square Dance scheduled for Oct. 21 at 6:00 p.m. We also have the Four Directions Walk on October 22/11.

Also please remember that we have our AGM on Oct. 23/11.
Thank you and God Bless all for your generosity, love and support.

Phoneathon
October 23 (Sun), 24 (Mon), 30 (Sun) are the dates that we require approximately 50 volunteers to assist us in this biggest fund-raiser of the year! We call all our supporters on our data base (1400 +) to give toward our year end goal of $25,000.00! We are gratefully using the office space of On Business to run this event over the three evenings – thanks Ken Day to you and your staff. So when your phone rings on one of those evenings, remember, it is friends calling friends to support Luther Village and reach our year end goal!

There may be a twist to this...we are working on saving some phone calls and doing it online, so if we have your email address, you may receive an email to donate at that time online! If you’d like to donate online instead of over the phone or snail mail, please send us your email address! Thanks so much for your continued support of this wonderful outdoor camping ministry we all own!

Ministry in Context in Peru
In our neighbourhood at San Juan, many parents who work do so 6 days a week, traveling long distances each day. Sunday is therefore a day to buy groceries, do all the cleaning, laundry (most often by hand!) and prepare the Sunday family meal.

Because of this reality, many, if not all, of the children come to worship without their parents.
This prompted Brigitte to ask me one day, "Pastora Fran, do you think my dad could come with me to church sometime?" To which I responded, "of course!" And she said, "ok, good, I thought God loved him, too!"

Alzheimer Coffee Break
Pinawa Lutheran Church held an Alzheimer Coffee Break on Monday, October 3rd, as a service to our community. We have held the event for several years, now, and the attendance continues to grow.

Coffee Breaks are a good opportunity for people to get together for a little social interaction, which has the added benefits of a protective effect against Alzheimer`s - not only is it good for us, but it`s fun too!

Special thanks goes to those who attended for coffee, those who brought (and bought) items at the Odds and Sods Sale, and brought cookies for the Coffee Break. All proceeds this year went to the Alzheimer's Society. Other years the sale portion was designated to support other local efforts.

In MB almost 19,000 people are diagnosed with some form of dementia each year. Currently 1 in 3 Manitobans have a family member or close friend with dementia. This year the Pinawa Coffee Break raised over $650 for the Society. This will help provide services for those with dementia and their families, as well as funding for research toward a cure.

An exciting summer!
And the excitement continues...teams of volunteer and staff missionaries made the long trek North to visit 54 First Nations villages in beautiful remote Canada. Teams ranged from 3 to 34 members (with the average being 8); numbers of people involved were in the 500's!

Communities in the North were ready! Arrangements were made, accommodations were prepared, and people were waiting anxiously to meet their friends from the South who traveled miles and miles to share the good news of Jesus with children, youth, and all others they met along the way!

Lenten Workshop to Focus on Indigenous Issues
The Red way has been a difficult path for Indigenous Anglicans and a seek week study in Lent will focus on the Indigenous struggle toward healing, reconciliation and wholeness.

“The Red way is the way of the Indigenous person,” explained the Rev. Canon Dr. Murray Still, leader of the six week series that will be hosted in partnership with Rupert’s Land Wechetowin Inc. and St. James the Assiniboine Anglican Church at 195 Collegiate Street in Winnipeg.

There are four races of humanity known as red, white, yellow and black. The “Red” way of Indigenous peoples (First Nation, Inuit, Métis, non status) in the Anglican Church has been one of a struggle for equality and self-determination within the Anglican Church of Canada.
