Cameroon Update

We were scheduled to depart yesterday on the Evangelism tour of the north, but it was postponed until the 21st of May because of conflicts with preparing the agenda of the coming Partners’ Consultation. The Evangelism trip will have stopovers in Guider, Mokolo, Rumsiki, Maroua and the village of Moulvouday. Moulvouday is where we have donated a motorcycle (Mary Ruth). I truly believe that accompanying evangelists and partaking in this program is one of the best expressions of what we are as  “companions”. The place assigned for the trip is in a very, very hot area. Jim and Phil were in Tcholliré last week and told us that it felt really cool once you went inside their guest house: it was 98˚F but outside was 110˚F.

To date projects completed or in process are: bursary for a pastor in Yaoundé University, a motocycle for Moulvouday, prosthesis for a villager in Mayo  Djinga, a bicycle for an evangelist in Tcholliré, rewiring of EELC Protestant Hospital and near completion of  construction of the roof in Beka Hosseré. We will supply funds, before we depart, for the purchase of a generator for the EELC Evangelism Program and two other churches in the west (Mayo Djinga and Nditam.) The unfortunate part is that we will not be able to travel there because of the bad condition (impassable) of the road. We will ask LBT Martin Weber to take photos upon his return in mid June.
On Sunday, May 4th we gathered together with the 60+ orphans in a sheltered area of the hospital dispensary (actually outdoors). We were not dampened by the heavy rains at 2:30 p.m. – in fact the children were most upbeat in their welcome of much singing, dancing and clapping. Great photos and videos taken to share our party experience with a drink and cookies. Val made peanut butter and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies for the kids and they were such a hit that she has had requests for recipes, and they want her to show them how. The problem is that they do not have ovens. Their food supplement bags were then handed out along with a take home bag of popcorn and candy.  Fanta is doing an amazing job along with her helper William, also a social worker. They not only supply these children with food supplements, but also monthly devotions and talks on proper hygiene and good behaviour. We hope and pray we can continue our support to aid these unfortunate children.

The ELCIC MNO Synod should be proud that our Companion Synod Program has accomplished and completed these projects. We ask continued prayers for our companions in mission and ministry within the Église Évangélique Luthérienne au Cameroun.
