National Convention - MNO Synod Delegates/Visitors Meeting
June 13th, 7:30 p.m. Synod Office
If you are attending the ELCIC National Convention as a delegate or visitor, we invite you to meet with other MNO Synod delegates/Visitors and have conversation about the issues coming to the convention agenda. Bishop Elaine will facilitate the evening and she encourages you to read the bulletin of reports before attending the meeting. Questions or comments may come from your reading and our conversation together.

This in no way takes the place of your work at the convention where you will hear other voices. It is merely a beginning point in the conversation and a way to familiarize yourself with the process of decision making that occurs at the convention. Please RSVP by June 7th to the synod office (dbeyer@elcic.ca) to indicate whether you will attend so that we can prepare refreshments and our meeting space for the group. We look forward to your participation.

Bishop and Council Chair Riding in Luther Village Bikeathon
Bishop Elaine and MNO Synod Council Chair Brian Lorch will both be riding in the Luther Village Bikeathon on June 4. This year marks the Bikeathon's 25th Anniversary and to mark the occasion, a fundraising target of $25,000 has been set by the Village.

Both Bishop Elaine and Brian encourage as many cyclists as possible to head to the Village that weekend for the event. However, if you can't participate in person or support participants from your own congregation with a pledge, why not join in by making a pledge in support of Bishop Elaine and Brian.

The suggested minimum pledge amount is $25 ($1 for each of the Bikeathon's 25 years). Please send cheques made payable to Luther Village to the Synod Office and be sure to provide a return address so that a tax receipt (for donations of $10 or more) can be mailed to you.

Help support our camp and its ministry to individuals, families, young people and others in communities beyond MNO Synod.  And watch for news and pictures in the June issue of Crossword.

Emergency Appeals Issued to Assist those Affected by Wildfires in Alberta and Flooding in Manitoba
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), through its partnership with Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), is appealing to its members for financial support for humanitarian aid to assist Canadians displaced by wildfires in Alberta and flooding in Manitoba.

A wildfire, along with strong winds, forced the sudden mandatory evacuation of 7,000 residents of Slave Lake, Alberta, during the early morning hours of May 16, 2011. Similar fires are threatening other communities in the region.

ELCIC
ELCIC
In Manitoba, flooding on the Assiniboine River and in the Interlake region has led to critical situations in several communities. An unprecedented controlled breach of a dike near Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, put 150 homes at risk in the hopes of preventing an uncontrolled release that would have put hundreds more at risk.

CLWR is issuing an appeal for funds to support humanitarian efforts which could include: help relocating those affected to safe areas; providing emergency shelter; providing food; and supporting congregational programs that provide assistance which fills potential gaps already provided by governmental emergency services. Based on currently available funds, $5000 for the Alberta wildfires and $5000 for Manitoba flooding is being committed to relief for each of these domestic disasters. The ELCIC and CLWR work in effective partnership with lead agencies which are providing front line services.

ELCIC National Bishop Susan C. Johnson is also calling for members to pray for the people who are threatened by the wildfires and flooding. She has prepared the following suggested prayer: "God of the Universe, you have created this world in which we live and have called it good. And yet at times the forces of nature seem out of control. We pray for all those who are affected by the flooding in Manitoba and the wildfires in Alberta. Help them, and us, to put our trust in your love and care. Motivate and equip those who are reaching out with hands and hearts to serve those in need. In our faithful prayers, in our generous response, help us to be a church In Mission for Others. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen."

Donations for the appeals may be made in the following ways:

1. ELCIC members are asked to donate to the appeals by making a designated offering donation for “2011 Alberta Wildfires” or “2011 Manitoba Flooding” through their congregation.
2. Donations may also be made through CLWR:
  • After May 18, online at www.clwr.org/donate. In the process of completing the form, you will come to a pull-down menu that allows you to designate a specific project. Choose “2011 Alberta Wildfires” or “2011 Manitoba Flooding.”
  • By calling CLWR's toll-free number: 1.800.661.2597 or locally at 204.694.5602.
  • By sending a cheque made payable to CLWR and mailed to: CLWR, 302-393 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6. Please indicate in your correspondence that you wish to contribute to the “2011 Alberta Wildfires” or “2011 Manitoba Flooding.”

Update from the Urban
Submitted by Sandy Belisle
Hello from the Urban. Well, as many people now know, our move out of the basement at St. Matthew’s has been put on hold for a short period of time. I will know more next week as there is a meeting of the building committee on Thursday. It is actually quite nice to have the assembly hall and the kitchen still.  Our meal teams are very gracious about the uncertainty with all of this.

Our wonderful volunteer, Aubrey H. will be taking on the job of parish priest at a very blessed church, and so he will no longer be a part of our ministry. I am happy for Aubrey, but he will surely be missed at the Urban. Aubrey’s last Sunday service at the Urban will be May 29th. There just are no words to reflect the gratitude felt for his contributions to the Urban.

ELCIC
We have had the most wonderful invitation from City Church. This is, as some of you may know, the old First English on Maryland. It is the one hundred anniversary of the building. I had taken Brad K. over there to take pictures of the stained glass windows after speaking with Pastor Nielson. The hard work of restoration and repair has brought the church back to the elegance I remember from my childhood. I was so over-joyed that I emailed Pastor Chell to let him know how wonderful an experience it was. Pastor Chell and his wife decided to attend a church service there and Pastor Nielsen spoke with them about the opportunity to hold an event at the church. Now, with some past members with a long history at First English, we have planned a service of Thanksgiving. We invite all churches to come and join us as we celebrate our past, and our future. The service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. This will be a combined service of Pastor Chell, Bob Jacob, and Pastor Nielsen leading us in a journey of past, present, and future. We may also be blessed with the presence of the choir of City Church. There will be many pictures documenting the rich history of First English. After the service, join us for coffee and a chat. This is also an opportunity to learn more about the wonderful services that City Church provides to the community.

The “Squeegie Guy”, who can be found at Maryland and Portage Avenue, has been showing his gratitude to the Urban for the services provided by donating the pennies and nickels that he receives.  He has donated over eighty dollars to the Urban. Thank you to Rhonda A. who patiently counts and rolls endless amounts of pennies.

Tuesday evening is reserved for what we call “Sharing Time”. Monica B. and Brad K. are regular volunteers for this. At the present time, we are reading the book The Shack and sharing on what we are learning about the main character. This is such a wonderful time and it is enjoyed by all. Wednesday afternoon is the Men’s Drop In at the Urban. We are one of very few places where time is dedicated to the men. We are going to have a member of UNPAC come and do a survey and there will be four workshops set up just for the men. UNPAC is a group that works on getting the recommendations of the United Nations, to end poverty amongst women, through education and action. One young lady has taken on a project that will work with the men in doing very similar work.

I am going to be taking some vacation time in June. We are working out the who, what, and when for while I am away. Rhonda Gates is a community member who works a limited amount of hours as the administration assistant. She will be available as much as possible during this time. Janet Kerr is the community member who manages the emergency food distribution and so she will continue to do so while I am away. I know that Maureen Benoit is always willing to lend a helping hand with meals and so things should be covered.

We had a family that had their house burn down, and as is so typical, there was no fire insurance. They have been receiving offers of donations of furniture, etc but they have no means to store it. If anyone has a space where things could be held until they find a place, please call Sandy at the Urban 1.204.774.3143 or email theurbanministry@gmail.com. Thank you

This past weekend the Luther Village Board of Trustees met at Luther Village for our annual weekend retreat to learn, work together and plan for our camp. There are a great group of volunteers working for LV as the board and we all have the mission of LV as our focus: "Under God's grace, Luther Village exists to provide Christian ministry in a harmonious outdoor setting to give all individuals the opportunity for growth and renewal of mind, body and soul." We strive for our vision to be experienced by all:"Luther Village is God's sanctuary! It is a vibrant Christian community where all are welcome." Please find some time to join us at YOUR church camp. If you've never been to our special camp in its resort-like setting, it's probably not what you expect! Come and see & experience Luther Village yourself!

I've been thinking that we have such a wealth of skill, talent and abilities in our congregations in MNO...some board members recalled this weekend that they know someone who can do little odd jobs for us, or offer a hobby for our use, or even more so, donate a specialty gift for an auction prize or has a trailer or truck that could haul things out to camp for us. If you know of someone or you yourself have a skill or something that would be useful for the ministry we have at Luther Village, let us know! Don't be shy! Share you, with us! You are part of this vibrant Christian community. Thanks be to God!

Winners of the 2011 Best Team Spirit Award!
Parkland Mental Health Promotions Committee Second Annual Chili Cook Off; Dauphin, MB
When you think about it, what BETTER award IS there for a church to win? After all, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to go out and share our enthusiasm for life with others in the midst of a hurting world. "Jumping for Joy with Jubilation for Jesus," four members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Dauphin; once again dubbed themselves, "The Lutheran Jumping Beans," and spent an evening taking part in a community event aimed at raising awareness that numbered amongst those suffering from mental health issues are our family, our friends and our neighbours.

Having had such a wonderful time taking part in the event the first time around, the "Jumping Beans" felt that given a healthy spirituality is an integral part of what goes into maintaining mental health, it was a perfect opportunity to yet again model for people that the church is a safe place, where people can come to find open arms and a sense of wholeness.

ELCIC Structural Renewal Task Force Report Now Available
Recommendations Focus on Equipping the Church to be In Mission for Others
Following two years of thoughtful analysis and church-wide consideration, the final report from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada's (ELCIC) Structural Renewal Task Force is now available. The report and an accompanying Frequently Asked Questions document can be downloaded from the ELCIC website at: http://elcic.ca/Structural-Renewal/default.cfm
ELCIC
The report emphasizes a focus on mission and equipping the church to be In Mission for Others through a framework that is flexible, affordable and sustainable, and offers the following recommendations: that the ELCIC be re-organized into three synods; existing conferences be reconfigured into 'areas' (also known as groupings of congregations) and supported by leadership teams; conventions of the National Church be smaller in size; and that both National and Synod Conventions be held triennially.

National Church Council (NCC) received the Structural Renewal Task Force report and recommendations at its April 2011 meeting and adopted the motion: That the National Convention approve the recommendations of the Structural Renewal Task Force in principle and authorize the National Church Council to move forward with the implementation process.

"Delegates to National Convention this year will be asked to vote on approving the recommendations of the Structural Renewal Task Force in principle only," says Sheila Hamilton, chair of the task force. "There will be no changes to structures as a result of this vote but rather implementation teams for synods and the National Church will be formed to look at the details of how to best implement the recommendations." Hamilton explains that these details would need to be brought before Synod Conventions in 2012 and the 2013 ELCIC National Convention for approval before the actual restructuring process could begin.

The ELCIC Structural Renewal Task Force was appointed in 2009 by NCC. Through participation at Synod Council meetings, Synod Conventions and a church-wide survey, the task force has focused on obtaining as much input as possible as they considered what kind of structure best suits the changing demands of the ELCIC's mission and ministry.

Further information on the work of the ELCIC Structural Renewal Task Force can be viewed online at http://elcic.ca/Structural-Renewal/default.cfm

KAIROS Actions 2011
Our MNO Synod Church and Society Committee encourages readers of Crossword to access the
information site for Kairos Canada to learn of current actions and ways our churches and individuals can participate in issues that are impeding wholesome social relationships in Canada and in relation to developing countries across the world. Kairos Canada is our ecumenical action organization, which seeks to address wide ranging human rights, indigenous rights, economic directives, care of the environment, mining and land use issues. The ELCIC is a full partner in the work of Kairos and seeks to encourage broad participation and support for Kairos initiatives.

ELCIC
The information site is: www.kairoscanada.org

Within the Kairos website you can access present and upcoming actions relating to:
Roll with the Declaration: June 20 National Event in Ottawa to join with Aboriginal leaders and church representatives to challenge Parliament to initiate implementation of the United Nations Charter of Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) in Canada. In November 2010 Canada signed the Charter and now the huge task of implementation needs to be undertaken.

Without persistent advocacy, our government will prolong and sidestep many of the issues surrounding building just relationships with our Aboriginal sisters and brothers....safe water, sustainable development, improved access to health services, land settlement, economic partnership, alleviating the social inequities and abuses, cultivating a climate of true partnership amid cultural diversities....these are all elements of acting out the adopted UN Charter.

The Kairos site will highlight the activities leading up to this event including banner making by local groups which will blanket the Parliament grounds. These banners will be collected on the Kairos Train that begins in BC and passes east to arrive in Ottawa for June 20. The train will stop in Winnipeg on the night of June 17 where our National Bishop Susan Johnson and others from our region will be onboard the train for Ottawa. There will be a send off event scheduled for June 17 at the Forks/VIA station. Watch Crossword for the exact time.

For you to join in the banner making activity, you can host a parish event, including a 45 minute event on the UNDRIP. Details for this are on the website. For Sunday June 19 there is a Kairos bulletin insert relating to National Aboriginal Day, June 21. This is set as a National Aboriginal Day of Prayer.

Also on the Kairos website you can access The Land, Our Life which outlines the Kairos resources and education tools for use in parishes and by local Kairos committees organized ecumenically.

Studying Luther in Wittenberg
Invitation to the Fourth International Seminar within the Luther Decade

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the member churches of the Lutheran World Federation:
We have already enjoyed three seminars studying Luther in Wittenberg for the Luther Decade. All have in common that all participants enjoyed the teaching, the fellowship, the program very much and went back home inspired, strengthened and much more familiar with Luther, his time and his theology. All liked the setting in this historical place and to listen to each other, to learn from each other and to experience spiritual community.

Laurier Mourns the Loss of Delton John Glebe
Laurier mourns the loss of Delton John Glebe, a pastor and former principal-dean of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. Glebe passed away Wednesday, May 11 at the age of 92.

Glebe enrolled in Laurier, then Waterloo College, in 1944. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947 and a divinity degree in 1950. Later, he received a doctorate in theology from Knox College at the University of Toronto.

He became a pastor and mission developer, but the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary also asked him to lecture part time – a rare tribute to a new graduate. In 1960, he was named a full-time member of the seminary faculty and was chairman of the board of governors when the institution received its charter as Waterloo Lutheran University.

In 1970, he became principal-dean of the seminary and witnessed the university undergo another big change: to provincially funded Wilfrid Laurier University. Glebe remained principal-dean until he retired in 1984 – though he continued to teach at the seminary long after.

The funeral was held Monday, May 16 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 22 Willow St., Waterloo.

Memorial donations to the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary’s Delton J. Glebe Bursary in Pastoral Care and Counselling or to Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo can be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home.
