Tickle your funny bone
A "Marrying Sam" Pastor had the practice of writing a chapter and verse on newlyweds' marriage licenses: 1 John 4:18. He would then instruct the couple to look up that passage in the Gideon Bible in their honeymoon suite. The verse read, "perfect love casteth out all fear", for the benefit of any who might feel nervous about the wedding night.
Well, one particular Saturday this Pastor was loaded down with a lot of weddings --so much so that with one couple he scribbled the chapter and verse so quickly he didn't notice that he had left out the "1" in 1 John. He then instructed the couple to look up that passage in the Gideon Bible in their honeymoon suite. So the couple did; but seeing no "1" before the chapter and verse, they thought it meant the Gospel of John. So they looked up the verse and it read, "The man you are now living with is not your husband."

| CLWR invites volunteers for domestic and overseas service The newest department of CLWR, International Volunteer Service, is looking for passionate individuals who are interested in sharing their professional skills with CLWR partners overseas. Volunteers will discover a new land and culture in the process. “We have volunteer opportunities in a wide range of countries,” says Sr. Monica Denk, international volunteer coordinator. Current placement opportunities include Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Mauritania, Colombia and Central America, among others. Volunteer terms range from six months to two years. The type of skills needed also vary widely. Communications, medicine, research, agriculture, program management and tourism are some of the skill sets being sought. “If you’re interested, you should contact us, and we’ll find a best-fit for your personal strengths and abilities,” says Denk. “We can also discuss how a volunteer mission could be financially feasible for you, if this is a concern.” People who are interested in volunteering but are unable to travel can serve as “virtual volunteers.” These valuable people remain in Canada and assist a field program remotely. They help with communication, translation and editing, report writing and information technology. Mozambique: after the floods Mozambique needs about $83.5 million to rebuild following February’s widespread flooding, exacerbated by Cyclone Favio, a senior government official said on Tuesday. The director for the Institute of National Disaster Management, Paulo Zucula, said the funds were needed to resettle tens of thousands of people in the middle of the country. One report states more than 170,000 people have been displaced and 45 others killed. CLWR, as a member of ACT International, is participating in an ecumenical relief effort. Philip Wijmans, representative for Lutheran World Federation—Mozambique, recently reported to CLWR from the Province of Sofala. “Almost everything is down because of the cyclone’s wind of 260 km/h,” says Wijmans, who adds that many schools lost their roofs. International Women’s Day Thursday, March 8 was International Women’s Day, and the United Nations focused this year on ending impunity for violence against women and girls. “Violence against women has yet to receive the priority attention and resources needed at all levels to tackle it with the seriousness and visibility necessary,” says a 2006 report by the UN secretary-general. Gender equality is one of several pillars that comprise CLWR community development projects. According to CLWR’s partner agency in Bolivia, Instituto Politécnico Tomás Katari (IPTK), “Women’s low level of participation in social structures of decision making and power must also be improved.” This improvement takes many forms. For instance, CLWR raises awareness about sexual health among women, enabling them to reduce their risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases like HIV. Women are trained in leadership skills, allowing them to actively participate in community projects and the political process. In Africa, CLWR helps impoverished families send their daughters to school and provides adult literacy classes for women.
