MNO Synod Council Launches 2011 Mission as Hope Appeal
Each congregation is receiving a packet of materials in the mail for the 2011 Mission as Hope Appeal. Congregational Councils are being asked to make some decisions about when the 2011 Mission as Hope appeal will be launched in their congregation.

In the packet, Bishop Elaine also thanks the congregations for the support that the Mission as Hope appeal has received in the past two years, $49,000 in 2009 and $45,000 in 2010.  While this funds some ongoing ministry, it is also responsible for a number of new initiatives that would not have been possible without this second mile giving.

May 1 Full-Communion Celebration
To the Faithful of the
Anglican Church of Canada and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada
Grace and peace to you.

On July 6, 2001, in the Waterloo Declaration, we Canadian Lutherans and Anglicans proclaimed our full communion relationship. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this historic and holy moment. 2011 also marks the 10th anniversary of Called to Common Mission which gives expression to the full-communion relationship between The Episcopal Church, USA, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

On the Second Sunday of Easter, May 1, 2011, our four churches will join in celebrations which will transpire on the border between the United States and Canada. At St. Paul's Anglican Church in Fort Erie, Ontario, at 3 pm, and at a similar hour across the Peace Bridge at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo, New York, Anglicans and Lutherans will come together to mark our respective 10th anniversaries and to honour the possibilities of future collaboration.

At Holy Trinity, Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will
preside while Archbishop Fred Hiltz will preach. At St. Paul's, National Bishop Susan Johnson will
preside while Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, Primate of The Episcopal Church, will preach. The
Eucharists will include the exchange of bread and wine from country to country, a rite of Thanksgiving for Baptism, a specially-prepared litany, the reading of a pastoral letter from the four church leaders, joint choirs and wonderful hospitality.

We invite the people of the Anglican Church of Canada and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada to pray for each other and for this holy endeavour. At the same time, communities are encouraged to host their own celebrations, on the Second Sunday of Easter or sometime thereafter, in their own churches, using the rite and litany prepared for our 10th anniversary celebrations.

May God who is bountiful, merciful and gracious empower us, encourage us and lead us into the next decade of our faithful journey together.

With all good wishes for a holy and blessed Lent.

16 Ways to Increase Giving in Your Church
Pastors, Council Members, Treasurers, Stewardship Committee Members
  • Is your congregation often struggling to meet budget?
  • Are you deferring needed maintenance?
  • Are you putting off adding programs or staff, fearful that you can’t raise the revenue?

If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, then the Seminar “16 Ways to Increase Giving in Your Church” may be useful for you.  In our increasingly secular and materialistic society, Christians do not automatically understand or know what it means to be faithful stewards of all of life, which includes our money.  This workshop is designed to assist congregational leadership to teach and model faithful and effective stewardship principals in your congregational setting.

Lutherans Worldwide Encouraged to Pray for People in North Africa and Middle East
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) General Secretary Rev. Martin Junge is calling Lutherans worldwide to prayer, support and advocacy concerning the humanitarian crisis developing from the swift political changes in North Africa.

In a March 3, 2011 letter to LWF member churches, Junge urges the churches’ prayers for people in North Africa and the Middle East so “that violence and repression will stop,” that people would “be treated with dignity and respect” and that leaders “will be chosen who are honest and accountable.”

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) National Bishop Susan C. Johnson added her voice to General Secretary Junge's call for prayers. "We pray for peace that is so desperately needed in North Africa. We deplore the choice to use violence, and pray for people of courage and good will to emerge as leaders, so that people's core human need for dignity, rights, safety and self-determination will be respected."

In December a popular uprising began in Tunisia, forcing the Tunisian president to flee the country in January. Similar protests in Egypt in January forced the country’s president to step aside in February. Protests that began peacefully in Libya in February are resulting in a huge humanitarian crisis as the country’s leader fights to keep his hold on power.

Job Opps
Ministry Opportunity in the Diocese of Rupert's Land
The Parish of All Saints, Winnipeg
Full Time Parish Priest

The Anglican Parish of All Saints' Winnipeg has rich and deep historical roots. In the late 1880's a group of devout Anglican, desirous of a "high" Anglican service, developed plans for an English Gothic building to be located in the heart of the City. This building served the parish until 1926, when a new (and current) church building was erected at a different location -- the corner of Broadway and Osborne -- a major intersection in downtown Winnipeg. With a large collection of stained glass windows, a magnificent pipe organ and ornate fretwork, this building is outstanding in its beauty and rich heritage.
