Bishop's Letter to Congregations

Dear Friends in the MNO Synod,

Grace and peace to all! I must admit I have been resistant to creating a response to the situation in Eastern Synod in which a local pastor “ordained” a married gay man to be “pastor” in the congregation at Newmarket, ON.

My resistance to writing a letter is that ANY letters that are written by ELCIC bishops in regards to any issue around homosexuality are taken and “interpreted” by groups on each side of the issue. Interpretations and assumptions are often made without further personal dialogue with the bishop to create clarity. What makes this particularly destructive is that these assumptions and interpretations are taken as “gospel truth”, communicated “around the world” as such. There is a further assumption that the interpreter knows best on which side of the debate the bishop is on and therefore can clearly speak on behalf of the bishop.

MNO Synod Congregational Study Guide

At a recent meeting of Metro congregations it was suggested that the synod office promote a “Congregational Studies Guide” (adapted from the local “Leisure Guide” which promotes leisure activities in the community). Is your congregation hosting a study- bible, cell group, ELW, small group, youth, video/DVD study this coming year?

If you would like to open your studies to the wider community, we would be happy to promote and list your study in our MNO Synod Study Guide, which will be available in late August on our synod website mnosynod.org.

Just send your information to Rick Scherger rscherger@elcic.ca by August 29 for inclusion in the fall guide. You will need to provide the name, dates, times of study and facilitator as well as where the written materials for the study are available for purchase and whether pre-registration is required. This is the minimum information that will go on the website. You might be surprised at who will show up in your neighbourhood, your town, or community!

Fundraising Update
In last Youth Loops, it was reported that some congregations were tithing their fundraising to put toward the Bolivia Youth Project. Here are some other stories to further inspire:

Sherwood Park Youth, Winnipeg have sent a cheque for $1200.00 to the National Youth Project in Bolivia. This was raised with two fall kick-off BBQ's for the congregation, with a 30/30/30 idea ( like a 50/50), with 30 going to the youth for the Winter Pre-Gathering event/ 30 going to the youth Whitehorse trip and 30 going to Bolivia. Also, half of all monies raised at coffee fellowship after services from Sept-May for the last two years went to the Bolivia Project.

Campus Peer Ministry

Our first season of campus peer ministry is now complete, and we want to say thank you to the young adults who have committed themselves to bring leadership on our campuses this past year. At the University of Manitoba, we say thank you to Jeremy Langner, Anita Oswald, Lindsay Buhr, Jeff Buhse, and Shelby Wilton. At the University of Winnipeg, we say thanks to Thomas Jordan and Rachel Borkowsky. At Brandon University, we say thanks to Lisa Lauritsen, and at Lakehead University, we say thanks to Alexis Albrecht. Thanks also to Kelly Speak and Alanna Borkowsky who assist Pastor Larry in overseeing this ministry. This past May, we met to do an evaluation, and made plans to continue the peer ministry model of campus ministry. Congratulations to those of our peer ministers who have graduated this year. Some of our peer ministers will be continuing for 2008-2009. And of course, we are still in the process of identifying and calling some additional new campus peer ministers.

How is God inviting you to help in this ministry? If you, or your son or daughter will be at university this next season, whether on our Synod territory or in another Synod, please email contact information (student name, congregation, email address and telephone number, university, faculty and year of study) to lulrich@elcic.ca. This will assist our campus peer ministers immensely as they attempt to make contact with all of the students that we know about on a particular campus. For those attending university outside of our Synod territory, the information will be passed along to the campus ministries in other Synods.

That means we need to fill in our busy fall weekdays, so if interested, even for 3 or 4 days, call Kim at the Village!

Many thanks to those people who came out to help us through the spring: Christian Robson, Tony Zak, Margo from Camp Stephens, and especially the spring kitchen staff who went the extra mile to pull together and work with all the different cooks and with each other!

Delegate Evaluation of 2008 Synod Convention

About 60% of the delegates attending the Synod Convention in Dauphin at the end of April completed Convention Evaluation Forms. This year’s convention saw all the business concentrated on Day 1 reserving Day 2 for a congregational renewal workshop event lead by Kelly Fryer. On the whole, delegates gave “two thumbs up” to the new format but also provided comments and suggestions that will be helpful when it comes to planning the 2010 convention.

A summary of the evaluations is now available on the Synod Website or by clicking on this link:

Mission News

Sage Creek and Waverly West - Anglican/Lutheran prayer and discernment groups around both missions continue to meet. Sage Creek is presently working with a consultant to determine their guiding principles and possible timeline. Waverly West is doing some similar planning, but are also monitoring when the actual homes in Waverly West will have some residents in them, and plan to some voluntary doorknocking welcome people to the neighborhood.

Garson/Tyndall - Plans for surveying the neighborhood are well underway.

Companion Synod News -
Pastor Jack and Val Fredrick are safely back home in Pinawa and recuperating from jet lag. They have pictures and stories a plenty, which over the summer will be organized in ways that can be shared with the MNO Synod congregations.

Multiplying Ministries - Upcoming Courses

Introduction to New Testament, September 12/13, Place TBA. (For lay people) This course is also a core course for those enrolled in the Certificate in Lay Ministry.

The textbook that will be used for the course is 'Introducing the New Testament' by John Drane (2001 edition). Those registering for the course will be asked to read certain portions in advance and it will also be referred to in class time.

Healthy Congregations- Monday evenings for 6 weeks- Sept. 22, 29, Oct. 6, 20,  Nov.3,17 at the Synod Office, with Bishop Elaine. This is a study group of lay people who will look at being proactive about the stewardship of the congregation- how people care for, respond to, and manage their life together as a congregation.

We are planning to set it up as a distance education evening in which individuals will also participate through a conference call technology. There may be some minimal cost for using this technology but I hope congregations will identify people who can participate so that we can grow healthy congregations and move positively forward in our call to do God’s Mission in the world. Our Study guide is the book, “Healthy Congregations, A Systems Approach” by Rev. Peter Steinke, who is a past presenter to our MNO Annual Professional Leaders Conference. Participants will be asked to read chapters ahead of our group time. The book is available from Augsburg Fortress or Alban Institute.

**We are arranging another course for the weekend of Nov. 21-22, 2008. Title and facilitator TBA in the August Crossword.

Lutheran Theology course has been moved to March 2009.

Stewardship Conference

Stewardship Conference, November 14-15, 2008, Canadian Mennonite University

Could your Stewardship Committee use a boost? Are you new to your congregation' s Stewardship Committee and could use some training? Have you been asked to be on the Stewardship Committee, and wonder whether this is for you? Then this is a conference you should plan to attend. WISL (Winnipeg Inter-church Stewardship Link), an ecumenical group of stewardship leaders, invite you to attend ABUNDANT LIVING - from doing stewardship to living stewardship, November 14-15. Dr. Mark Vincent will be addressing this conference from the faith understanding of living life from the perspective of "enough rather than not enough, gratitude rather than entitlement".

There will also be a number of breakout sessions that will include: The Young and the Restless - seeing young people as a resource to the church
-After the Tithe - what about the other 90%
-The Apostle Paul's Stewardship Manual
-It's Tough to be Green - stewardship of creation
-I've Been Called to be on the Stewardship Committee - now what?
-The Ecumenical Face of Stewardship - a conversation with denominational leaders

Mark you calendars now and be watching for the publicity to come to your church in early September.

Churches Planting Churches Conference

In September of 2007, five people from the MNO Synod attended this conference which was held in Moorhead, MN. It was an incredible inspiration to us.

What did we learn there? We learned that the new model for mission development is all about individual congregations reproducing and planting new congregations, rather than relying on top-down mission development initiated by synods or national church bodies. We learned that sometimes a congregation needs to give up their building in order to be resurrected into something new and missional. We learned that Spirit-led mission that meets the real needs of people, knows no bounds. We learned that there was a time not that long ago when we thought that to be a successful church in the community, all we needed is a building, a pastor, and enough people to pay the bills. The emerging church of the future needs to see itself as a missionary outpost that equips and sends all God's people into the world to be the real presence of Christ in the daily life of others.

Well, another CHURCHES PLANTING CHURCHES CONFERENCE is happening this October 23-24 in Sioux Falls, SD Says Keith Zeh, Mission Consultant for the Dakotas and Minnesota, "The Canadians added so much to the experience last year, that I wanted to be sure that you knew about this opportunity." Registration last year was minimal, so the real costs were the cost of driving down and accommodation. Let Larry (lulrich@elcia.ca) at our Synod Office know if you might be interested. He can then be sure to give you updates as they come to the office.

Silence at Four Corners

It used to be a grim existence for the men and women in Kolkata, India, who cannot speak nor hear because of physical disability. At a disadvantage to find work, many fell into begging or prostitution. Life has changed remarkably for some, however, who have found Silence.

Silence is a self-help organization that allows these people to craft goods for sale. These artisans aspire for self-sufficiency and strive for acceptance as contributing members in their society. Silence is a certified fair trade organization and a member of the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT).

“Silence is a perfect compliment to our existing artisan portfolio,” says Bruce Rose, program manager for Four Corners, CLWR’s alternative trade organization. “Our customers have consistently asked for a greater range of candle products, which is what Silence is providing.”

Four Corners sells a range of Silence candles from $1.50 to $30.00. All are natural beeswax or paraffin and are smokeless and drip free. The candles are available with or without fragrance. They are available through regular Four Corners consignment sales.

For more information, to find a sale near you or to host a sale please call Four Corners at 1.800.661.2597.

ELW e-news

Be Not Afraid Women's Convention is less than a month away. Unexpected delays were experienced in the compiling and the production of the convention guide. Our printer assures us it will be in the ELW office by Monday, June 16. It will be mailed as soon as possible.

Convention resolutions and a discussion sheet were emailed to most delegates a couple of weeks ago. The convention guide, resolutions, budget and discussion sheet are currently available on the website, www.elw.ca. Click on Convention 2008, Business. Do not print the convention guide. It is lengthy and it will be mailed to all delegates, convention registrants and all Congregational ELWs.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Registrations for the convention are still coming in. Over 200 people will be gathering to be enthralled by stories, art and musical encounters, good food, good speakers and the joy of being a Christ-centered community!

There are some people who have made accommodation reservations and have not actually registered for the convention. Could that be you? Please be sure that you have contacted that University of Calgary to: 1. make accommodation reservations and 2. register for the convention. As well, if you are visitor and have made your own flight bookings, please inform the ELW office of your arrival and departure times so that you can be included in the airport pick ups arranged by the Local Arrangements Committee.

The Jackie Schmitt Leadership Fund Star fund-raiser has been a success. Over 600 stars have been ordered with contributions totaling over $10,000. Due to this wonderful response we will not be having the Synodical fund-raising challenge at the Convention. We will truly enjoy a Starry, Starry Night Banquet.

Pastors and congregations may have received a letter from Mr. Bruce Kintz, CEO of the Missouri Synod’s Concordia Publishing Company in the United States.

The company has recently made a change in distribution and communication practices and is now communicating directly to congregations, leaving their partnership with Augsburg Fortress aside. While we cannot assume to direct congregations and leaders away from the CPC resources, I want to encourage you to use Augsburg Fortress as a primary Lutheran resource for your congregations. Augsburg Fortress resources reflect the theology of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and MNO Synod and they publish resources that help us to make an impact on ministry in Canada.
