The MNO Synodical Periodical Volume 5, Issue 12 June 16, 2011
Grants Available through MNO Synod Foundation
Start Planning Now
Now is the time to begin brainstorming about what your congregation might do in the way of a special project in 2012 to advance one or more of the missional directions of the MNO Synod.
MNO
These are:

1. Strengthen all God`s people for discipleship.
2. Embrace passionately a call to spiritual renewal through: prayer, study, scripture, worship, give, tell, service.
3. Celebrate the abundance of God`s gifts.
4. Nurture relationships with neighbouring congregations and the community at large.

Applications for small grants up to $2,000 to support such projects are available from the Synod. Applications will be accepted up until September 30, 2011. A grants review committee appointed by Synod Council will review the applications in October and make a recommendation to Synod Council who will in turn make a final decision at its November meeting. Successful applicants will receive their funds early in 2012 to begin implementing their projects.

Guidelines for completing an application to the Small Grant Program and as well as an application form can be downloaded from the MNO website. The guidelines and form can also be obtained by calling the Synod office. 204.889.3760.

The MNO Synod Foundation for Mission and Ministry Inc. (The Foundation) has an asset base of $490,212 as of December 31,2010. This resource continues to grow because of the generosity of synod family members. The strength of the asset base allows us to award grants for mission and ministry projects in the MNO Synod on an annual basis.

There is a strong need to grow the assets of the Foundation and we ask you to encourage people in your congregation to look at a variety of ways to assist the church in this regard.

Consider a bequest to the church, that a certain portion of an estate be given to the church. Purchase a gift annuity in which the church invests the money and is committed to paying the donor a guaranteed income for life. The church receives the remainder of the principle when the donor dies. Give a life insurance policy as a gift. It may mean donating a paid up policy that the donor no longer needs. Take out a new policy that is owned by the church and which is payable to the church on the donor’s death. Charitable remainder trusts such as cash, bonds, stocks or real estate gives the donor ongoing income from the investment or the donor may convey the stocks and bonds directly to the church.

Planned gifts that celebrate special occasions and milestones are also a way to recognize the church’s ministry. This may be for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, etc.

12 for 12 Challenge
In London Ontario, August 22nd, 2010 Canadian Lutheran and Anglican youth groups were presented a mission project: “12 for 12”, and encouraged  to complete this mission by the next CLAY gathering (which will take place in Saskatoon, summer of 2012). In conjunction with Canadian Lutheran World Relief, we (as young people ) were asked (as a whole) to develop 12 communities by August 2012. CLWR claims $5,000 is required to equip a community with various resources needed to begin sustainable development, making our  mission goal to then raise $60,000 in time to travel to Saskatoon.

We are “Our Testament”, a worship team/band comprised of musically talented young people from the congregation of Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, in Winnipeg MB; and we are taking part in the “12 for 12” challenge. We as group have taken a lead role in fundraising within our congregation to satisfy the developmental needs of one community, making our goal to raise $5,000. The only question we had was “How exactly are we going to make this happen?”

Every few months “Our Testament” will lead modern worship music for Sherwood Park’s Sunday services. November, 2010 was first opportunity to lead a service upon returning from London, we introduced the “12 for 12” mission  project to the congregation, and invited them to make a donation towards the project. That Sunday, we raised over $750!  We were truly overwhelmed by the compassion our members had towards the mission. In February, 2011 “Our Testament” hosted a coffee house, and served specialty coffees, cappuccinos, and frozen-hot chocolate, and donated proceeds from every admission ticket towards “12 for 12”.

Eldership Unleashed Conference, May 26-29
This ecumenical conference was sponsored by leaders of the Cariboo presbytery (North Central BC) of the Presbyterian Church.. The Cariboo presbytery is beginning to be known as a missional church that is actively planting new congregations in North Central BC primarily through a lay led house church movement. This conference was designed to inspire all God's people to claim and to live into our baptismal calling to become active ministers and partners with God in Kingdom work (priesthood of all believers).

The plenary speaker was a lay person who is in charge of mission planting in the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand. Four lay people from the Brokenhead Conference and Pastor Larry attended this conference with two main goals in mind, to see how a lay led house movement might be adaptable in our Synod where congregations are facing diminishing resources or where pastoral leadership cannot be found and to explore whether a house church structure might be a model to look at for our Synod as we look at new mission plants. Attendance at this Conference was made possible through Mission as Hope new initiative monies.

Common Ground Youth Leadership Conference, May 31-June 5
Three youth leaders, Maure Lackman, Brittany Braun and Lisa van Dijk, along with Sarah Gelhorn, our young adult ministry facilitator, and Pastor Larry, our youth ministry coordinator availed themselves of a wonderful national ecumenical youth leadership conference planned ecumenically by P.A.U.L. (Presbyterian, Anglican, United and Lutheran youth ministry leaders). Inspiring worship, plenary talks, and a multitude of workshops including topics like Developmental Psychology of Adolescents, Young Adult Ministry, Youth in Consumer Culture, Teens and Self-Injury, Faith and Media, Youth Spiritual Practices, Advanced Social Networking, Canadian Youth/Racial Issues, Youth and Worship Music rounded out our time. The ability to network and listen to the ideas of other denominations and regions was perhaps the best part of this experience. common ground

Church Council Leaders, Mission Committee Leaders and Pastors
Mark your calendars and plan to be part of reCall: Living Mission in a Consumer's World. Every two years, Mission Planting Canada plans a national congress to inspire church leaders to actively work at being missional churches in our contexts, as well as to support new mission plants. On November 15-17, this congress (www.thecongress.ca) will take place in Winnipeg, so it will never be more economical for our leaders to attend and be inspired. For this to really take hold, it is strongly encouraged that you aim to have at least two people (the more the better) attend from your congregation so that there is a shared experience from which to work when you go back to your congregations. At budget time last year, Pastor Larry encouraged you to put some money in your budget to have folks from your church attend.

The Synod Committee for Mission is very excited about this opportunity, so they have registered us to take advantage of a denominational group rate, which means that we have committed that at least 20 Lutherans will attend, which brings the price down by $30 per person to $169. Moreover, from the Mission budget, they have also committed to subsidizing the first 25 people to the tune of $80 per person. If you are interested of taking advantage of this group rate, as well as taking advantage of the subsidy, contact Pastor Larry at lulrich@elcic.ca

SCRIPTure:Find your Mark in the Spotlight
This is the theme of this year's Thanksgiving Youth Retreat, October 7-10 at Luther Village. Caroline Wintoniw, Martine Teetaert, and Barret Miller, all with drama training, will demonstrate and train our young people with the tools to work with up to 10 Biblical texts from the year of Mark (Advent to Pentecost) in order to create a 'script' for dramatic sermon presentations on these texts. Not only will the scripts will be made available for use in your congregations, but our young people will be empowered with the tools to work with a text and create other presentations as well. We know this will be a blessing to our congregations. Be on the lookout for registration materials and posters that will come in hard copy to your congregations by the end of June.

Keeping it Simple
Submitted by Sandy Belisle
Lutheran Urban Ministry in Winnipeg is a very busy place. We are now located in the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in west central Winnipeg. We serve a large community of those living in poverty. There is another community ministry that is open Monday through Friday. This is the St. Matthew’s Maryland Community Ministry. We serve the same community but the Urban primarily provides services from 12:30 to 9:00 p.m. St. Matthews Maryland has hours from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m.

One might ask how we can function with our hours over-lapping. It is quite a blessing because we run programs that enhance each other. Wednesday has typically been “Women’s Drop In” at St. Matthews Maryland. The area has also got the West Central Women’s Centre just one block away. The Urban opened up the Men’s Drop In on Wednesday to accommodate a meeting place for the men of the area. There is a lack of these services for the men in the local area and so we have been very popular with the community.
