Meet Sarah
Sarah Gelhorn has been appointed as the MNO Synod Young Adult Ministry Facilitator, effective January 1, 2010.

Building upon our experience in the MNO Synod of intentional outreach, nurture and leadership development with youth, MNO Synod in Convention (April 2010) approved the creation of a half time position for a three year term, as a way to strengthen our campus peer ministry program as well as young adult ministry in our synod congregations.

Sarah brings to this position her vibrant faith, her leadership experience as a program staff person at Luther Village and as a congregational youth and young adult ministry coordinator, her extensive contacts with young adults in our synod, and her skills of gift identification and team building among her peers. Sarah looks forward to working alongside and supporting our campus peer ministers, existing or new congregational young adult groups and ministries, as well as networking with young adults across the synod. Sarah can be contacted at sgelhorn@elcic.ca.

Exciting New Plans from the Committee for Worship and the Arts
The MNO Committee for Worship and the Arts met on January 3, 2011. We have made some exciting plans to assist parishes in their worship life by:
Establishing a prayer group for rostered and lay leaders within the synod;
Providing links to worship resources under the Worship and Arts Banner on the MNO website;
Providing a regular W&A column for the Crossword to assist in renewing and empowering congregations.

A main focus of these columns will be to provide information to smaller and rural parishes as they seek innovative ways to overcome challenges relating to worship in a small setting. Watch the Synod website and future Crosswords for updates and initiatives being launched.

Update from the Urban
Dear Ambassadors, Pastors, Church Leaders
A huge thank you to the many churches and groups who were so very generous to the Urban over the Christmas season. We were a part of the big community Christmas feast that was put on by St. Matthew's, Grain of Wheat, and St. Matthew's Maryland Community Ministry. The Urban volunteers were magnificent. The dinner had fed three hundred in the past. This year the count was just under five hundred according to Cathy Campbell. The place was packed. Due to the generosity of our churches we were able to ensure that every person received a hygiene kit, mittens, hats, scarves, and the children had special treat bags made by the OWL group from Epiphany. We had also put out a request for winter foot wear and the response was overwhelming. Many of our people received new or nearly new foot wear. All of the food that we received was greatly appreciated. Thank you just does not seem to cover the greatness of all of the kindness shown. The renovations at St. Matthew's will be starting soon. The first phase will be in the downstairs area so we will all be moving upstairs for a period of time. Once the work is done, everyone will move downstairs while the construction of apartments will begin. We will all be going through a new experience and so it will be a challenge. Our meal teams will most likely have to bring food in crock pots, which most do, and we will not have access to the big kitchen for a period of time. We will likely have to resort to paper plates and such until we get back down into the kitchen. Thank you to the Ambassadors for all of their time and effort.

Lutherans and Mennonites Celebrate New Relationship
By: Brenda Suderman - Winnipeg Free Press
They already share a building and a passion for ministry in the North End, but this Sunday, a Lutheran church and a Mennonite congregation will worship together to mark a new chapter in their relationship.

This 10:30 am, Jan. 9 service of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and Aberdeen Evangelical Mennonite Church at Trinity Place, 265 Flora Ave., celebrates the repair of a rift that dates back 500 years.

"Historically, it's deeply significant that something that happened in the 16th century is being cleaned up once and for all," explains Rev. Ron Penner of Aberdeen, who pastors the small Mennonite church with his wife, Ruth.
"It's ridiculous, it's terrible, what we said and did and (how we) acted in the past," says Trinity's Rev. Ron Nelson of how 16th-century Lutherans labeled Mennonites and other Anabaptists as heretics.

Last July at their meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, the Lutheran World Federation extended an apology to Mennonite World Conference, expressing regret and sorrow for persecution of Anabaptists and the succeeding theological documents that supported this persecution.

Young Leaders In Mission for Others
Evan and Kate Durston  were the leaders of the  CLWR “We Care” Advent challenge at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Lac du Bonnet. Evan made an announcement at worship each Sunday in Advent, providing  information and updates, and motivating many other congregation members to participate as well. By the fourth Sunday in Advent, over 30 packs had been gathered and assembled, ready for shipment to Haiti. With some assistance from their parents Scott and Pam, these young servants are helping this small, vibrant congregation, to be in mission for others.

LWF Together - The Earth Needs You
This past summer, the LWF held it's 11th General Assembly in Stuttgart Germany. For ten days prior to the Assembly, the Youth Delegates met in Dresden, Germany to discuss the issues that concern and are affecting youth and young adults in the church around the world.

Two areas of importance were focused on that require extra emphasis - Environmental Sustainability and Visibility of the LWF. The attached information is the preliminary stages of projects undertaken by the LWF to help us work towards our areas of interest. More information will follow in January, 2011, but this is just the beginning to have your input really count when it comes to global issues and concerns. Sincerely, Jeff Buhse.

All Rostered Leaders Serving in Congregational Settings - Help with a Survey
From Jackie Nunns
Many of you already know me through my work with Augsburg Fortress Canada. Currently I am also an MA student at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, and my advisor is Dr Kristine Lund. I am conducting research about Adult Christian Education in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC). The purpose of this study is to explore how ELCIC congregations are providing opportunities for adults to mature in faith. This research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at WLU, and your synodical bishop has expressed support for this work.

I am inviting you to participate in this research by completing an online survey during January 2011. The survey questions inquire about the kinds of adult learning opportunities that are being offered in the congregation or parish you serve, who is participating in these, and your opinions regarding the role and effectiveness of learning in adult faith maturation. Your responses will be collected anonymously.

PLEASE NOTE:
The survey will take approximately one hour to complete. Each person will be allowed to access the survey tool only once.
