Shared Ministry on Flora and King
Psalm 91:1 (depending on the translation) uses ‘secret place’, ‘shelter’, ‘habitat’, ‘place’ or ‘centre’ as the place where we abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Secret Place Ministry, First Nations Family Worship Centre, Trinity Food Pantry, Aberdeen Mennonite and Trinity Lutheran Church have all chosen to abide under Trinity Place.

In 2007, Trinity Lutheran celebrates 119 years of ministry in Winnipeg.

By way of some history, the city of Winnipeg expropriated the Trinity Lutheran property on Dufferin and Salter in 1964. Trinity chose to rebuild in the renewal area on Flora and King. A new building was dedicated in 1968.

The neighbourhood was originally settled by Northern European immigrants. It is now being settled by immigrants from Northern Manitoba.

Trinity has struggled to continue to do ministry in the neighbourhood, arguably one of the most difficult in which to raise a family. However, The Spirit is here and bringing about wonderful transformations in peoples’ hearts.

The Neighbourhood Outreach Ministry (Trinity Food Pantry) was started about 20 years ago to help in the ministry. It has always been a separate entity under the umbrella of Trinity Lutheran. At the moment, Trinity, Grace, Sherwood Park, Christ, Epiphany and St. Luke Zion Lutheran churches and people from the community continue that ministry. They do it by providing food, clothes, money and volunteers. Financial support from outside groups like Downtown Kiwanis is gratefully received. With tremendous help from Winnipeg Harvest forty to fifty families receive two weeks supply of free food and free clothes once a month. At the same time, with Luther Home’s assistance, a nutritious meal for 100 – 200 people is also provided.

Many children from David Livingstone school drop in for lunch.
In 1998, the stress of maintaining a ministry at Flora and King almost reached the breaking point and a congregational meeting was called to vote on the closing of the congregation. The motion was defeated. Many people had and continued to leave the congregation. When Pastor Kalthoff accepted a Call to another congregation, the German Worship service ended.

Trinity Lutheran and Pastor Ronald Nelson, both looking for part time ministry, found each other in April 1999. Six weeks became six months, six months became six years and now eight years later, they are still together. Was it a match made in heaven? Probably not, but 75 stubborn Germans and one stubborn Swede are still together doing ministry on Flora and King.

In June 2004, First Nations Family Worship Centre (who had been using space in the building) inquired about buying the building. Trinity decided to list the building to test the market.

Prior to the listing of the building, Trinity made the following their mandate. If the building is sold:

  • We will continue to worship someplace in the North End.
  • We will use some of the proceeds to purchase property for an office, meetings and storage.
  • We will use some of the proceeds to ensure the heritage and artifacts will not be lost.
  • That immediately at the sale of the property, 10 % of the proceeds would be divided equally between MNO Synod, GHDA, CLWR, NEST and the Food Pantry.

Once the building had been listed for sale, numerous church and community groups from the area, indicated an interest in it. They, like Trinity, all wanted to continue in the neighbourhood. These groups have all expressed the following: “The finding of funds to run the programmes is hard enough, to also find capital funding is almost impossible.” So, Trinity had the building and others had programmes or at least ideas for programmes.

Currently, besides Trinity Lutheran and Trinity Food Pantry, Aberdeen Mennonite, First Nations Family Worship Centre and Secret Place Ministry use the building.

A totally accessible building and a congregation that is learning to share the facility, enables Trinity to serve the community better than they ever have.

Through the continued support of the small group at Trinity and contributions and money and ministry from the other groups who use the building, Trinity Place continues to keep the doors open and do ministry on Flora and King.

Gifts designated for one or more of Trinity Place’s occupants goes directly to that ministry.

Trinity Place welcomes the larger community to visit us at Flora and King.
