CrossWord is a weekly publication of the MNO Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.
We encourage congregations and committees to use the information printed here.
Feel free to print and share the information or copy and paste to include in your weekly bulletins.
Please forward the link to members on your distribution lists.
If you have an idea for a story to be included in the next issue of CrossWord, please contact Rick Scherger at the Synod office at: 204.889.3760 or email rscherger@elcic.ca
Deadline for submissions is Friday at noon.
For many years now, these short articles about congregational life and renewal have come to you from the Committee for Mission, through the Bishop's Newsletter. With the moving forward to 'Crossword', this is not possible, since The Parish Paper is purely a print-on-paper publication. An annual subscription to The Parish Paper gives your congregation copyright permission to photocopy or reprint 12 consecutive issues of this monthly publication and include them with your newsletter, and/or to use them locally for any purpose you wish. The publisher will mail camera-ready masters . |

Canadian Lutheran World Relief News CLWR issues appeal as cyclone worsens flooding in Mozambique |
Youth returning from CFGB food study tour in Honduras Nine youth, including one representing CLWR, are returning tomorrow from a food study tour in Honduras. The two-week trip to Central America was organized by Canadian Foodgrains Bank, of which CLWR is a member. The group followed the “food justice highway” to see first-hand how Canadians are linked to food justice issues in Honduras and how their faith plays a role in their response. In the group’s blog (www.foodgrainsbank.ca), participant Mya Wheeler shares an experience she had: “In Honduras, the minimum wage is … about 120 US dollars or so [per month]. If you work that out including rent and a few other basic needs that leaves about [13 US dollars] per week for food. We had to use this … to buy a family of 7 food for one week, using United Nations [nutrition] standards…. For the most part we realized that this diet would be extremely meager and almost too basic.” Of course, the blog is a perfect chance for the group to good heartedly thumb their collective noses at those back here in a wintry Canada. A single-line entry on the site declares about Honduras: “Everyone is very friendly and the cold is not missed.” |

March 8 is International Women's Day. |
| 2000 - 2007 IWD is now an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. Annually, on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. While there are many large scale initiatives, a rich and diverse fabric of local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, and government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. Tickle your funny bone
A mother was teaching her three year old daughter The Lord's Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she repeated it after her mother. One night the youngster said she was ready to solo. The mother listened with pride, as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end. "And lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver us some e-mail, Amen".
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!"
| GHDA ISSUES APPEAL FOR DONATIONS TO ASSIST WITH RELIEF EFFORTS FOLLOWING SEVERE FLOODING IN MOZAMBIQUE |
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada's Global Hunger and Development Appeal (GHDA) is accepting donations to support relief efforts in Mozambique after weeks of heavy rains in the central Zambezi River valley caused severe flooding to the area. Further flooding is feared with the arrival of Cyclone Favio, a powerful tropical cyclone with reported winds of up to 230 km per hour, which hit southern Mozambique on Thursday morning. According to BBC reports, "Cyclone Favio, the strongest to hit the southern African country, was heading towards the Zambezi River valley where it was likely to worsen floods that have already killed some 40 people and driven 120,000 from their homes." Designated funds received through GHDA will be sent on to Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) which is already engaged in relief efforts in the region, including the evacuation of low-lying areas and the distribution of immediate shelter materials, blankets, clothing, food and cooking utensils. Following fears of new flooding, CLWR reports, "staff from CLWR partner organizations are visiting each project area to warn and help disaster-preparedness committees prepare for the cyclone." Restoring food security and capacity-building to create better disaster management practices will be part of CLWR's long-term goals in the affected region. To support relief efforts in Mozambique, donations can be made to GHDA - Mozambique Appeal as follows: | |
