Convention

The Holy Spirit is on the Loose in the MNO Synod!
Renewal Event - at the 2008 Synod Convention in Dauphin
Saturday, April 26, 2008

How do we know?

  • Within the past 2 years, the synod council has articulated an exciting vision and mission.
  • Our Bishop brings passion for God’s mission, a desire for congregational renewal across the synod, and a commitment to lay ministry.
  • There is a growing sense among church leaders that “something new” is possible in their congregations, communities, and across the synod.

We have contracted Kelly Fryer, author of Reclaiming the “L” Word and Reclaiming the “C” Word, to help build on this momentum for the sake of creating missional change in the people and congregations across the MNO Synod.  The one-day Renewal Event will lead participants in worship, prayer, Bible study and focused conversation around some key missional questions:  Who are we?  What is our purpose?  How has God gifted us to fulfill that purpose?  What are we going to do now?

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Council members and other leaders in your congregation
  • Young adults
  • People in your congregation who have read or studied Kelly Fryer’s books.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

  • You will go home with a “purpose statement” and a list of “next steps” that you can take to your congregation for the sake of renewal.
  • You will receive an outline to help you lead a similar event back home that will be designed to engage the whole congregation in this process of reconnecting with God’s purpose for them and God’s vision for their communities.

Space may be limited so please register early!

MNO Synod needs your help

Do you have any pictures that you would like to share with other members of the MNO Synod? We are currently looking to update our quickly-growing library with the following photographs:
worship events, learning events, youth events, outdoor ministry, seminary, young adult events, campus ministry, sunday school, ecumenical events, music groups, Christmas concerts, and any other special events.

As these will be used for synod publications, please ensure that all subjects have given permission to use the photos.

Please email photos to rscherger@elcic.ca.

Stewardship Thots

Reclaiming Stewardship from "Paying the Bills"
The cold winds of January were blowing. In the warmth of the church basement, Pastor Johnson eagerly reported, "Stewardship was very good at First Church last year. We not only paid all the bills, we even had a little extra money that we have carried over into the new year."

Unwittingly, Pastor Johnson had just become an accomplice in one of the most dastardly kidnappings ever known to Christendom. Without intending to do so, the good cleric had just kidnapped stewardship and replaced it with "paying the bills." Unfortunately, Pastor Johnson has countless partners in crime across our land.

When talk about money in the congregation focuses on the need for the congregation to receive members' money rather than the need for the members to give generously as a part of their relationship with their Lord, the kidnapping has occurred.

When your congregation presents a budget to members during the "stewardship program" and some well-intentioned finance committee member stands up and says, "Costs for everything are going up, and the church is no different. We need everyone to increase their giving for next year to help cover the increases," the kidnapping has occurred.

If some time in December a wealthy member of the congregation asks, "Pastor, how much do we need to make the budget?" and then writes a check, the kidnapping has occurred.

Every Council Visit update

Synod Council wishes to thank the congregations and congregational councils for taking time to welcome a Synod Council member to visit with them during November and December 2007, in order to listen and to share what we are able to accomplish together in the MNO Synod. The questions that each congregational council was asked to talk about prior to the visit were the following:

    • What are two things you value most about your congregation?
    • Synod Council is interested in learning what concerns you have for your congregation, and what steps are being taken to address the concerns?
    • What do you believe God is calling your congregation to do at this point in its life to be more fully “in mission for others”?
    • The Synod has embarked on an electronic communication strategy through our website (mnosynod.org) and a weekly newsletter, Crossword. Any comments/suggestions?
    • The 66 congregations in this Synod do make a difference. In what ways does your congregation partner with the Synod family?
    • Questions/concerns that you have for Synod staff/Synod Council?

MNO Open House
Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the Open House at the MNO Office Tuesday afternoon. We all shared fellowship, fun and food. With the help of Mr. Albert Christ and Mr. Horst Schmidtke, two volunteers from St. John's Lutheran Church, we also blessed the new space. Mr. Christ was responsible for the wiring and technical advice. Mr. Schmidtke donated the doors, including the hand-made doors for the front closet, that are some of the first things you see as you enter the office. Mr. Art Metz was also thanked. Mr. Metz was responsible for offering advice on the design and he provided the drawings for the reconstruction as well. Thank you to the trio of volunteers. Check out the pics below.

Prayer in Action Conference

Bishop Gary Woolsey, National Director of the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, will lead a Prayer in Action Conference on Friday evening, April 11th and all day Saturday, April 12th, 2008 at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 220 Helmsdale Avenue in Winnipeg.

Some of the sessions, as well as the closing banquet, will be held at Grace Lutheran Church. The conference co-sponsored by the Diocese of Rupert's Land, the Diocesan Anglican Fellowship of Prayer and St. Stephen's.

We hope to attract not only Anglicans and Lutherans, but members from all Christian denominations interested in sharing and learning how to further develop their prayer lives and translate their prayers into actions.

The Conference promises to be a wonderful experience that will celebrate God within each individual, nurture that Spirit within us, and challenge us to live out that Spirit "to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with our God " (Micah 6:8).
