| Reclaiming our name | |
We are called to be the “Evangelical” Lutheran Church in Canada, a church in mission, partners with Christ in bringing God’s reign of love. Five individuals from our MNO Synod, Anne Marie MacIntosh, Kim Scherger, Dave Chell, Robert Grewe, Jason Zinko, and two Anglicans from the Diocese of Rupertsland, Jennifer Sisson and Preston Parsons, joined me at the Mission Developer’s Training Event in Chicago from August 17-21, 2007. While it will take a bit to process all the information that we took in during the five days, particularly how this translates into our setting, we came back with a clear sense that we each need to see ourselves as today’s “petros” (Peter) from Matthew 16: 18. We are to be a “petros” not afraid to speak about who Jesus is in our life, a “petros” fired up to reclaim our calling to be “evangelical”, to be in mission, partners with Christ. We heard stories about rural churches giving birth to something new, about remissioning congregations who seemed to have lost their purpose, about new starts in areas of growing population, and even about a new congregational outreach that does Word and Sacrament ministry under a bridge, with the homeless who live there. We were inspired, prodded, challenged to pray and vision, and then reminded that even though we are a “petros” whom Christ will use to build the church, it is nevertheless Christ’s project, Christ who builds, and not us. Watch next week for some pictures and some further reflections. |

In June congregational representatives were invited to attend a Companion Synod Dinner in which they were introduced to our upcoming Companion Synod Sunday. We have designated September 30th as Companion Synod Sunday in all congregations of the MNO synod and hope that your congregation will support this “In Mission for Others” emphasis. |

| Please give thanks and celebrate with us. This afternoon, August 16 at 1:06 pm CDT, Hazel Pauleen Picklyk made her entrance into the world. We first saw her when she was just 3 hours old. She is beautiful and looks so peaceful and content. I think she even smiled at me. Hazel is a beautiful daughter for Chris (my son) and Wendy (my daughter-in-law). Hazel was delivered by C section and weighed in at exactly 7 pounds. We are all delighted and are giving thanks to God for her safe arrival. |

| As parents in Canada scrutinize the flyers in their mailboxes for the best back-to-school deals, they are sharing a basic experience with others across the world. They are trying to figure out just how many tools they can afford to give their children to help them learn in school. For many parents and orphans, however, the decision isn’t about whether or not to spend the extra money for a better computer. It’s about whether to spend the money on something as basic as a pad of paper—or whether they can afford going to school at all. The challenge of educational resources affects entire communities as well. In places like Mozambique and Zambia, teachers struggle to make classes work in outdoor spaces with no more than a tree for shade and shelter. A chalkboard propped against the tree trunk can sometimes be the only clue to an outsider that the gathered children are in class. You can help! In fact, there’s several ways to improve the opportunity for education of those overseas, starting with a basic financial donation earmarked “education.” And if you find yourself shopping for school supplies, consider picking up a few extra pencils, an inexpensive ruler and a few other basic items for one of our We Care School Kits (www.clwr.org/WeCare)? These kits, when put together by your own child, can be a useful way to teach your own children about compassionate giving. |
