What's Up, Sarah?
Hi, I’m Sarah Gelhorn and as you may have heard I have accepted a position with the MNO Synod as Young Adult Ministry Facilitator. I have grown up Lutheran and have worked with youth for the past 4 years. I have attended 2 National Youth Gatherings as a Youth and 2 as a Youth Leader. Youth Ministry was a major part of my life; it was hard to give it up. When I heard the MNO Synod was looking for someone to work with Young Adults I thought it would be a great opportunity to grow with the Youth that I have been working with.
The Position as Young Adult Ministry Facilitator is a half time position for a 3 year term. Along with the Synod Position I have been working as a Health Care Aide half time and have really been enjoying the variety. I have worked as a Health Care Aide for 3 years. I really enjoy working with people and caring for them.
I have spent the last 3 months getting familiar with what is currently happening with Young Adults. I have spent quite a bit of time at U of M and U of W with the Peer Ministry Programs. The Peer Ministry Program is a program that older students help support newer students with the struggles of finding things around campus, making connections, and helping them through tough times. We also do fun things like coffee and donuts, and participate in other activities put on by the Chaplains association. Other than U of M and U of W we have Peer Ministry in Brandon and Lakehead.
Other parts to my position as Young Adult Ministry Facilitator include helping congregations with Young Adult Programing. I will be helping establish programs, supporting current programing and helping where needed. I have participated in a few events within a few churches, and it has been great to see what is going on already! I look forward to helping other churches create something similar to what is working with other groups, or creating something that will work with them.
I will be planning events to bring the Synod together, similar to what we have been doing with Youth in MNO. A way to help with the “what next,” after Youth Group. I look forward to continue planning events, retreats, and ways of worship. After speaking with some Young Adults, Pastors, and Synod Staff we are hoping to come up with some new worship strategies geared toward the 18-35 group. I am really looking forward to my new position. It will be a lot of new things, but I trust God will lead me! I appreciate all the thoughts, prayers and support. |

| Annual Reports |
| By now, most congregations would have completed their congregation’s annual meeting. If you have not sent in a copy of your congregation’s annual report to the synod office, we would appreciate receiving a copy. This helps synod office to get a bigger picture of how the whole synod is doing and what congregations are doing in terms of ministry. Thank you for providing this information to us. |

How NOT To Be Your Kid's ATM
Thanks to Gimli Lutheran for hosting the Synod Stewardship Workshop "16 Ways to Improve Giving in Your Church" on March 26. More than seventy individuals attended. One of the breakout sessions at the Workshop that was highly endorsed was called "How NOT to be your Kid's ATM".
In a society where we are bombarded with up to 5000 messages a day to spend, spend, spend, and where we know that the target group of the majority of advertising is to children age 3-6 in order to establish "brand loyalty", how do we open up in conversations in our homes that assist us in talking about principles and values of sharing and saving, as well as spending?
|
 |
 |
Why not try some of these 10 conversation starters at your dinner table with your children or grandchildren, and see where it goes:
1. What was the worst spending decision you ever made? What was the most satisfying purchase you ever made?
2. What is your most treasured possession and why does it bring you so much happiness?
3. How do you make a decision about where, when and how much to give as a family?
4. When have you bought something because someone else thought you should?
5. What is the longest period of time you have saved money for something?
6. How many commercials do you see that encourage you to share some of your money? How do those commercials make you feel?
7. How much do you spend each month on connectivity (such as phone, cell phone, internet, cable)?
8. What three items do you own that could be better used by someone else?
9. If your family needed to cut $500 from your monthly spending, what would go?
10. What would your life be like if you gave away 10% of your family’s income?
For more information on "Share, Save, Spend" materials and how they might be used with families in your congregation, please be in contact with Pastor Larry at lulrich@elcic.ca |

A lady that I have known for some time came to the Urban today. This lady has found herself being the foster parent to three of her grandchildren. She has one boy 16 years old and two girls who are 15 & 14 years old. She had to leave her previous furnished apartment in order to provide a home for the kids. They are in desperate need of beds, pots, pans, dishes, bedding & blankets, dressers and a kitchen set. They live one street over on Agnes. Any of these items would be deeply appreciated. Please contact Sandy at 204.774.3143 or theurbanministry@gmail.com if you are able to donate any of these items. Thank you. |

| New ELCIC Election Resource |
Election resource assists members in engaging in personal and public reflection on important federal election issues
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) is making available a new election resource to assist members in becoming actively involved in the May 2 Federal Election.
The new resource, titled 2011 ELCIC Compassionate Justice Election Resource, helps members engage in the federal election as responsible citizens and spirited disciples by providing questions that might be asked of candidates and their policies on topics such as poverty, climate change, human trafficking and international development.
“It is a right, responsibility and a privilege to be able to choose our leaders through a democratic process,” says ELCIC National Bishop Susan C. Johnson. “I encourage all members of the ELCIC to consider prayerfully what it means to be In Mission for Others around important election issues.”
The resource, which also provides background information on the work of the ELCIC and its partners, encourages members “as people of faith,” to reflect on the values of “compassion and justice” to inform consideration when casting a vote.
The ELCIC’s Constitution (Article IV, section 2.g.) identifies that one expression of the church’s mission is to, “study issues in contemporary society in the light of the Word of God and respond publicly to social and moral issues as an advocate for justice and as an agent of reconciliation.”
ELCIC members are encouraged to use the 2011 ELCIC Compassionate Justice Resource to assist in pubic discussion, personal reflection and prayerful consideration on how to create a society that is rich in compassion and justice.
The 2011 ELCIC Compassionate Justice Resource can be found online at: http://www.elcic.ca/Documents/ELCICElectionResource.pdf |

| The KAIROS Federal Election Kit |
| The prevailing wisdom among mainstream journalists and political pundits is that Canadian voters don’t care about politics or the federal election. It may be true that some Canadians have tuned out and others may never have tuned in, but it’s also safe to say that in cities and towns across this country there are people who care deeply about Canada’s democracy and about where the federal parties stand on issues that affect their families, communities and the world at large. The women, men and youth who make up KAIROS’ constituency are among them. This election kit offers questions that can assist KAIROS companions and communities as they engage with candidates seeking to secure their vote on the critical issues that will affect our common future. The 2011 election campaign has been framed for voters as a choice between a stable economy on the one hand and ethics on the other. As a nonpartisan, charitable organization, KAIROS does not give its support to any political party; nor does it advise its constituency about how to vote. KAIROS does take the position that economic stability and an ethical approach to meeting the needs of humanity and the Earth through social and ecological justice are not mutually exclusive. Our position is rooted in our commitment as people of faith to care for our neighbor and the earth.
Like most Canadians, members of KAIROS’ cross-Canada network rely on their Members of Parliament to represent their concerns in Ottawa. What are those concerns? Among them is a sense of urgency about addressing the global climate crisis, concern for the rights of Indigenous peoples and commitment to democracy and human rights in Canada and around the globe.
We offer this short kit to help KAIROS companions and communities find out where their political candidates stand on issues of concern to them. When your candidates come calling or come to a public meeting, you’ll be ready.

| LTS Spring Course Offerings |
The following courses will be offered in the Spring Term and in order for us to let the faculty know whether or not we have sufficient enrolment to run the courses we need to have registrations in to my office no later than Wednesday, April 20th, 12 noon.
Please respond by email susan.avant@usask.ca if you wish to register for either or both of the courses. Thank you. SL/BL 340 The Hermeneutics of Exile Dates: May 9-13, 2011; 3 credits Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Instructor: The Rev. Dr. Vern Ratzlaff Course Description:
The thesis of this course is based on the premise that the Bible was written, edited and shaped by a people in exile. We can be in exile even when staying in our country of birth (Klein). Exile is a sociological phenomenon that has implications for the culture, values, self-identity and religious paradigms of those exiled. This course will explore the psychological and sociological effects of exile and examine some of the religious literature that emerged from the (Babylonian) exile. We will also use ‘exile’ as a hermeneutical key for our preaching. The participants will write a paper on this hermeneutical theme, as well as developing a sermon from the lectionary texts, seeing how ‘exile’ helps shape our response to those texts.
PL 350 Turning Chaotic Differences into Creative Diversity
Dates: May 16-20, 2011; 3 credits
Instructors: Ray Friesen and Greg Nelson
Time: 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday
Course Description:
The focus of this course is on conflict resolution in congregations. The course will be taught in two parts. The first part will focus on how we resolve conflict in our own lives and situations, including in work relationships, with a special focus on conflict in church settings. The second half will be an introduction to mediation—intervening when other parties are in conflict.
The course delivery will focus on the skills and tools needed, and the training in how to use those skills and tools for successful conflict resolution. In the learning of Hebrew or Greek, students learn the language, the alphabet, sentence structure, translation, etc., instead of theories of language, and they learn by doing rather than by listening to lectures, reading books and writing papers. In a similar way, in this course, though it includes lectures and demonstrations, the emphasis will be on role plays and other ways in which the participants learn the skills needed. |

Visit www.clwr.org to read the Partnership newsletter online, and contact us at 1.800.661.2597 or clwr@clwr.mb.ca if your congregation or group is interested in sponsoring refugees.
