Situation

The Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Synod of the ELCIC will undertake a four year fund development campaign to support four areas of ministry that represent the synod’s commitment to being “In Mission for Others”.

The four ministry focus areas are:

  • Rural Ministry:  supporting the Church and Society Committee’s efforts to build awareness for greening initiatives. It also includes funding for rural internships, The Rural Ministry Institute, rural ministry initiatives to remission the small and struggling congregations of our synod.
  • Leadership Development:  supporting the Multiplying Ministries program, a ‘First Call Program’ and succession planning for leadership; scholarships for candidates for ministry; increased opportunities for volunteers in mission; support for our seminary.
  • Synod Foundation for Ministry:  building a lasting legacy for the synod by providing en endowment to fund future needs.

The campaign will be launched at three events from May to August 2007.

Tasks to be accomplished

The consultant will work with volunteer coordinators in each of the four ministry areas to identify and develop resources, coordinate special events and assist with fundraising advice and support.

Particular tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Developing an overall campaign strategy, schedule and budget
  • Campaign promotion within the synod constituency
  • Planning and management of special events including Bishop’s Dinners, Cameroon visitors exposure tours and dinners, youth events, seminary alumni events and other fundraising activities in Winnipeg and rural areas
  • Development and presentation of fundraising workshops and communication resources
  • Identification and nurture of potential significant campaign supporters

Scope and guidelines

The consultant will be engaged for a one year term, renewable for each subsequent year of the campaign, and will be expected to commit time equivalent to approximately .15 FTE per year. The fee will be paid on a project basis at agreed upon intervals with no benefits. The consultant will predominantly work from their own office.

The successful consultant will demonstrate experience, skills and knowledge related to:

  • Fund development and fundraising
  • Event planning and management
  • Communicating to a diverse community
  • Promotion and marketing
  • An understanding of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada in general and the Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Synod in particular

The chosen consultant must be able to travel within the Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Synod territory.

The successful consultant will report to Bishop Elaine Sauer and work cooperatively with all synod staff and the volunteer campaign coordinators. The consultant will also be responsible for providing regular campaign reports to the MNO Synod Council through the Bishop.

Ben's Story of Hope

How many 10-year-olds do you know who would list a birthday without presents as their best ever? You can understand why this story about Ben Wattenhofer, a 10-year-old at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church , caught my attention. I encourage you to share this story with the 10-year-olds in your congregation.

Grace and peace,
Jerry Hoffman
Director of the Center for Stewardship Leadership, Luther Seminary

Ben's Story of Hope
Ben decided that he wanted to have his party at "Pump it Up," a literal warehouse of inflatable trampolines of all varieties. Ben's mom, Diane, decided that this would be fine. However, because of the extravagance of the party, she asked Ben to forego any presents from his friends that day. Like many of us, Ben has enough. Instead Diane suggested that Ben find a charity and ask his friends to give a gift in his name. Ben agreed.

Ben and his mom spent time together researching which organization Ben would like to support, and they found Kids Against Hunger - West Metro. Ben, in his then 9-year-old enthusiasm, went out and raised $350 from his birthday friends. Later, Ben and his friends decided to have a second birthday party, this time packaging food and off they went. Ben's birthday team packaged 5,472 meals for hungry people. Ben, in his now 10-year-old wisdom, cried in joy for those he and his friends helped. I did too.

Ben's mom told me it was his favorite birthday ever and, "He didn't notice the absence of presents."

When Ben learned about KAH - WM's annual "Packathon" he declared, "We'll be there!" And they were. Ben came with an additional $37 from his "hot chocolate stand," as it had been too cold that week for lemonade. "It's the best thing we've ever done," said Ben's mom. Who could disagree?

Ben's story is used with permission by Pastor Scott Searl , pastor of Faith Formation & Stewardship at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.

Important updates from LUM

Bulletin Inserts
The board of LUM has been meeting regularly since last fall and is presently in the process of developing a constitution and by-laws. We are also working toward becoming a registered charity under the Corporations Act. At the same time, the work of the ministry continues. We welcome and are thankful for your financial support for this ministry. Contributions can be made through regular Sunday offerings designated LUM.

Lutheran Urban Ministry is currently running a clothing exchange that works much the same as a food bank in that clothing is provided to people who need it. This is a request for in-season SPRING OR SUMMER clothing. There is always a need for SOCKS, so if your sock drawer is overflowing with socks you no longer wear, get together with your fellow
congregation members and arrange delivery to 441 Sherbrook. Call 774-3143 to arrange delivery time.

Turning the Church right side up

I am writing to invite/urge you and your congregation to participate in an exciting opportunity, the forthcoming MNO Synod Stewardship Practicum:  Turning our Church Right Side Up: Revitalizing Congregations in Mission and Stewardship”.  A portion of this practicum (Thursday and Friday) is for pastors/diaconal ministers only. Saturday is geared for lay leaders (and pastors/diaconal ministers). While it would be of greatest benefit that both rostered ministers and lay leaders attend from each congregation (strongly encouraged), please send whatever representation that you can.

Our special guest presenter is Dr. William Avery of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Professor of Stewardship and Parish Life, and noted author of two books “Empowered Laity” and “Cooperating Congregations”. He is presently working on another book that is entitled “Revitalizing Congregations.” Through my conversations with Dr. Avery, I am excited that this practicum will provide us with many new tools to assist us in the work of revitalizing our congregations in mission and stewardship in this post-modern era.

Further information is and will continue to be available on our new MNO Synod Website at www.mnosynod.org, but here are the basic details:
          Dates:         May 24-26, 2007
          Location:    Canadian Mennonite University,
                             500 Shaftsbury Blvd. Winnipeg
Cost:           $50.00 for pastors, $25.00 for lay
(4 or more lay people from a single congregation  - $100.00 maximum)

Who should attend?
Pastors, Stewardship Committees, and Church Council

Why should you attend?

  1. Because all of our congregations need revitalizing
  2. Because we live in a different time and our “old” models of mission, evangelism, and stewardship no longer work
  3. Because we need one another as we seek to rediscover the mission and purpose God has for each of us and our congregations
  4. Because we will be provided with some practical mission and stewardship tools to use in our congregations
  5. Because it is very good value, since the majority of the cost of this event is being covered by grants from our National Church and our Synodical budget
  6. Because for lay people from congregations that would be required to stay overnight or have significant travel costs, some additional grant monies may be available to offset those costs

Pastors/Diaconal Ministers   - 10 rooms have been pre-booked at CMU if you wish to stay, first booked, first served. It is assumed that most folks within an hour will drive back and forth.
- Registration/accommodation/transportation can be claimed from your Continuing Education fund.
-  Pass on this information to Church Council and stewardship committees in your congregation.

Council Chairs
Present this practicum at your April Council Meeting and encourage participation from council members and other leaders in your church.
Make it known that as many lay leaders as  possible can attend for $100 which is the maximum from any one congregation. Try to cover the cost of registration from your congregational budget.

Stewardship Chairs
Talk it up and have as many members as possible from your committee attend the Saturday session.

Make as many copies of the registration form as necessary or download from the website. Registration deadline is May 8, 2007
