MNO Synod Convention 2008

The following information is for delegates, youth assembly, visitors, and guests attending the Twelfth Biennial MNO Synod Convention:

37 – 3rd Avenue N.W., Dauphin, Manitoba

ATTENDANCE:                   
The MNO Synod Constitution, Article VII, Section 10 states:
“All ordained ministers serving under call shall attend
all conventions of the synod and the meetings of the
conferences to which they belong.”

and Article X, Section 6 states:
“The eligible voting membership of conventions shall consist of:

  1. One lay delegate from each congregation and, from congregations having more than 300 baptized members, one lay delegate for each additional 300 baptized members or major fraction thereof;
  2. Ordained ministers on the roster of this synod.
  3. Lay diaconal ministers on the roster of this synod.
  4. Lay members of the Synod Council.”

REGISTRATION FORM:     
Your registration form is included in this mailing and is also available on the MNO Synod website at www.mnosynod.org.  Please complete and return the registration form to the MNO Synod office by March 15, 2008 along with payment in full by cheque made payable to “MNO Synod”. 

REGISTRATION FEES:     
Delegate:  $590
 (fee includes bulletin of reports, minute book, other materials relating to the convention, all meals, accommodations, travel, complimentary banquet ticket, and the one-day Renewal Event with Kelly Fryer).  There is no charge for rostered ministers who are retired, unless they are representing a congregation.
                                               
Youth Assembly Participant:  $125  (fee includes bulletin of reports, minute book, other materials relating to the convention, all meals, accommodations, travel, complimentary banquet ticket, and the one-day Renewal Event with Kelly Fryer).  Please see “Youth Assembly” section below.
                                               
Visitor:  $200  - please see “Visitors” section below.
Late Registration (after March 15, 2008) is subject to an additional fee of $25.00
No refund of registration fees will be given after April 10th, 2008.
Text Box: Synod Bylaw, Part III, Section 1e states:  “Each congregation or employing agency shall pay the registration fee of its delegate(s).  In the case of a pastor serving a multiple-congregation parish, such expenses shall be borne by the congregations pro rata on the basis of baptized membership.  Those pastors serving under a call issued by the Synod Council, and serving in agencies which do not allow funding of Synod Convention costs, may apply to the Synod Council for permission to attend at Synod expense.”    Synod Council interprets the above by-law to mean people who have a Letter of Call and not those who are On Leave from Call or Temporarily Without Call.    Those requesting to attend the convention at Synod expense must submit their request to synod council by March 15, 2008.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

REGISTRATION                    
Registration packets will be available as follows: 
PACKETS:                                   
For those taking the bus from Winnipeg:   please pick up your packet at Messiah Lutheran between 10:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.
For those not taking the bus:  your packet will be available at the Canway Inn in Dauphin from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and at the convention office at Dauphin First United Church thereafter.

BULLETIN OF REPORTS:             
The Bulletin of Reports, including the convention agenda, will be mailed by March 24th, 2008 to all those registered for the convention.

TRAVEL:                               
Buses are booked to transport delegates from Winnipeg to Dauphin and return.   The buses will leave from Messiah Lutheran Church, 400 Rouge Road, in Winnipeg, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 24th.  Packets must be picked up by 11:00 a.m. before boarding the bus.  Please arrange to be dropped off at Messiah, as there is no overnight parking available.  The buses will return to Messiah on Sunday, April 27 at approximately 4:00 p.m. 
 
A light lunch will be provided upon boarding the buses.

For delegates traveling to Winnipeg to take the bus, mileage will be paid at the rate of 12 cents (plus 3 cents per passenger) per km. for mileage above 100 km. each way.  The passenger(s) must be a delegate to qualify.  If flying to and from Winnipeg, economy airfare will be paid.

For delegates from the Westman, Aurora and Interlake Conferences driving directly to Dauphin, any mileage above 100 km. each way will be paid at the rate of 12 cents (plus 3 cents per passenger) per km.  The passenger(s) must be a delegate to qualify.  No mileage will be paid to delegates from other conferences if they choose to drive on their own, rather than taking the bus from Winnipeg, except for special circumstances.

Travel will be paid on MNO Synod territory only.

LOCAL COMMUTES:         
Throughout the convention, buses are available to transport delegates to and from the convention site, hotel, banquet, and closing worship.

An extra cost of $25 will be charged to visitors requiring local transportation.

ACCOMMODATIONS;        
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Canway Inn & Suites, 1601 Main St. S. and Super 8 Motel, 1457 Main St. S. in Dauphin.
     
Reservations must be made through the Synod Office

  1. For delegates sharing a room with a delegate or visitor:  the cost of the room will be covered under the registration fee.
  2. Delegates requesting a single occupancy room must include $50 per night with your registration fee.
  3. Visitors:  Please see “Visitors” section below.

All other room charges will be your responsibility and must be paid as you check-out from the hotel.

Check out time is 11:00 a.m.   For those attending Sunday morning worship, please allow enough time to check out before leaving for worship.

MEALS:                                 
All meals are included in the registration fee for delegates, youth assembly and visitors.  Your name tag is required to be shown at all mealtimes
                                               
A light breakfast will be served in the basement hall of the Canway Inn.  You are welcome to eat your breakfast in the hall, or take it back to your room.

Lunches, refreshment breaks, and suppers will be served at the convention site, with the exception of supper on Saturday which will be  the banquet.

If you choose to eat out at any of the many restaurants in the area, you will be responsible for paying the cost of your meal.

Please indicate any dietary needs on the registration form.
                                               
CONVENTION PARTICIPATION:                     
Thursday evening:  Opening worship will be held at Dauphin First United Church followed by a reception.  Everyone wishing to attend is welcome!

Friday:  will be devoted to the business of the convention.

Saturday:  will feature a Renewal Event with our guest presenter, Ms. Kelly Fryer.  In addition to the delegates, youth assembly and visitors, anyone across the synod may register for this one-day event.  

Banquet:  The Convention Banquet will be held Saturday evening, April 26, 2008 at the 11TH Avenue Hall, in Dauphin.  The banquet will feature dinner and local entertainment. 

All delegates, youth assembly and visitors who are registered for the convention will receive a complimentary ticket in their registration packet.  Extra tickets are available for purchase (prior to April 10th) at $25.00 per ticket from the Synod office.  Please call the Synod office if you wish to reserve extra tickets.

Closing of the Convention:  will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dauphin during their Sunday morning worship service.  All are welcome!

YOUTH ASSEMBLY:          
Part III, Section 2 states of the MNO Synod By-Laws states:
“c.  The youth assembly shall consist of fourteen youth from seven conferences.  Each conference is eligible to appoint two youth as their representatives.
  d.  Youth shall be baptized members between the ages of 15 and 21 on the first full day of the convention.”

VISITORS:                            
Visitors are welcome to attend the Synod Convention but must register as a visitor for a fee of $200 in order to observe the convention proceedings.  The registration fee includes the bulletin of reports, minute book, other materials relating to the convention, all meals, complimentary banquet ticket, and the one-day Renewal Event with Kelly Fryer.  The fee does not include travel or accommodations.

Travel:  If you wish to take the bus with the delegates to and from Winnipeg, please include $80 with your registration fee.  If you require local transportation while in Dauphin, please include $25 with your registration fee.

Accommodations:  You may reserve a single room at $100 per person/per night or a double occupancy room at $50 per person/per night.

DISPLAYS:                           
All displays must relate to one of the Synod’s standing committees and ecumenical partnerships.
